I don't think you are using golems in the right way if your Starships are doing better than them. I win with golems all the time; they are the backbone of my fleet. Sometimes when I go for a core world, I may lose one, but they are the most durable units in the game. If the most durable units in the game are going down like a wet sack of hammers, time to reevaluate your strategy.

Hive Golem's job is to let loose a swarm and run.
Botnet Golems should be at max range at all times.
Black Widow Golems belong in a fleet ball.
Armored Golems are single target killers.
Artillery Golems should go on planets with Gravity Drills.

I need to try the other golems.
