rescue but no monsters?

Just did a rescue, but all that I saw after freeing the guy was those spears with skulls on it (monster spawners?)  But no real monsters appeared.

Is that normal?

Sometimes you can reach the entrance to the rescue mission before the monsters can spawn. It happens occasionally, but I wouldn't count on it happening every time :)
