Endless Space

If x³ had been half like eve online (without players) it'd be a great game ;)
Trading is infinitely better in EVE
Combat is more fun
Ships fly smoother
There is story NPC's, captain quarters, and you can walk on stations
The problem i have with EVE is the online part, I absolutely hate online games like that (grind, more grind... more grind) but I'd love a eve offline, with bots that are half-way smart replacing players.
But that said, the new X Reborn LOOKS like it fixes the issues, but my main fear is that combat is again a brain-dead "who's got the better missiles" affair.
Moonshine Fox:
Combat was really what turned me off in the end. And the long, boring hauls in transport ships to make any kind of money. I dunno, on the paper it's a game I should love with all my heart, but it just didn't click. That annoys me, you know :P I should like it, damnit!
keith.lamothe:
Did you get the brain firmware patch to fix the bug where some people didn't like the game? ;)
keith.lamothe:
My main enjoyment of the X universe has been reading the AAR's of NuklearSlug's Dead-Is-Dead games. Not entirely dissimilar to reading DF succession game stuff: it can be a lot more fun than playing the game, if you don't have the time to sink into it yourself.

So, just like EVE Online with players then? ZING!
I kid, I kid. It seems like whenever I boot up X3 I just fly around a system for a while and look at some pretty graphics and then shut it off. Sometimes I then go back and play around in Freelancer again. Even though it's starting to look pretty dated, it still captured the best of the lone guy in a spaceship genre for me. I don't know what it is about games involving space that seem to involve so many pitfalls for bad design decisions. My list of space games that do things right is pretty much AI War, Freelancer, and now tentatively Endless Space. Endless Space on probation, anyway, because it does currently have some pretty dumb mechanics, but that may entirely be bug related or incomplete alpha status related. I'm getting the feeling that maybe I should try some of the older Space 4Xes though. MOO 1 and 2 and SotS seem to be pretty well regarded. I'm also hoping that maybe Starlight Inception will turn out to be amazing. It just baaaaaaaaarely made its Kickstarter goal recently, so we won't see a game out of that for more than a year though.
