Linux dedicated server?
« on: May 12, 2012, 11:16:29 AM »
I would like to host a 24/7 server for AVWW, but I don't really want to keep my Windows machine running all the time. Is it possible to host a dedicated server on console-only Linux? Even using WINE would be good enough, if there is no native Linux build available.

It's not possible to run console-only, but I think some have managed with a WinE-environment. Let's see if I can find that thread...

There we go; I don't use Linux myself, so I'm not sure how helpful it is, but have a look at this thread:

The game runs reasonable well under WINE although obviously performance is not as good as on Windows but i've kept up a server up without too much difficulty.

Yea, the server isn't a very demanding application (nor is the client, really).  If you do encounter a bottleneck due to network traffic or server cpu or memory load, we'd be very interested in what it took to cause it :)

It would be so awesome if we could decouple the graphics from the logic, but as far as I've understood Unity, that is an impossibility, so a console-only server is a no go :(
