The lava flats and the deep in particular are meant to be uber challenging extra areas, eventually with commensurate rewards as well as commensurate challenge.  That's the main reason for keeping the general overlord stuff separate from that -- these areas are supposed to be abnormally intense, and optional, and will only get moreso with time.

The deep is a pretty fantastic place to gather shards, just go in a few buildings and you'll end up with thousands.
The lava flats are just... Meh though. I only really go there for magma. Although the desert seems to be better for them.

Well, those microrex scrolls are pretty fun to play with. I end up using microrex during rescue missions to block piercing shots for my rescuee.

Plus, NPCs and the Ilari will actually TALK to the microrex, instead of being unintelligible to the draconite I'm usually running around as. Darkvision is pretty handy for tactical awareness and exploring.

edit:

Looking at the screenshot I can't help but thinking 'if only that windshelter on the west side of the screen was one square south of where it is now.' That would've uncovered the LT's tower shallows tile.

So, they WONT talk to the humanoid lizardman running around that clearly has a glyph following him.....

....but they WILL talk to him if he turns into a really, really tiny T-Rex.

I cant even think up a witty comment for this one.

Most NPC's just chat a load of Bawls anyway.

I think it's more like the draconites can't understand the humans. You get a bunch of filler text about how it looks like the tasty-looking creatures are flapping their jaws at you.

The Ilari on the other hand, though ... All you get is literally an ellipsis. I'm guessing it might be a fallback string in case there ARE no strings for the case it's trying to find text for.

And, of course, draconites can't even talk to other draconites either.

I still like how the Ilari and some NPCs constantly heap abuse, distrust and threats on my Skelebot character depite it having killed two lieutenants.
