I started playing AI Fleet Command about 6 mo. ago, and have well over a hundred hours into it.  I've read the guides,  however  I can't come close to winning a game.  When the AI decides to attack with 6K ships ( sometimes with 140K ships,  but the results are the same),  its game over, period.   And it always happens.  There are not enough data centers to keep AI progress low.  Unless I kill AI command stations, the situation always evovolves at best into a stalemate, where the AI attacks on enough fronts to keep me too busy to persue additional strategy.   I use the default settings of easy, 80 planets.  Things go south when the AI gets to 500 or so.   I'm not a fan of using cheats,  but without them, I can't see how the game is winnable.   It just doesn't seem possible to obtain enough resources to attack the AI Home without pushing it past 500.

For some tactical inspiration, I offer up a couple of my recent AARs:

Insanity of Difficulty run
AI 9 through 10 run(s)
Disposable Heroes

It's quite doable.  If you want to discuss your strategies/tactics/options, drop a post or two on the main board describing your situation and older players will usually be happy to help you discuss your options and where your tactics might be making the game a lot more difficult for you then it needs to be.
... and then we'll have cake.

what Wanderer said =)
Post your situation with questions in the strategy category (or write a story and put it in the AAR section) and some of the more experienced players here will be more than happy to help you =)

Unfortunately the Steam community is too large to effectively organize games. If you have over 150 members, you can't actually chat with anybody without first adding them as a friend. This makes it cumbersome at best.

I'm not sure how to fix this, but I made a smaller steam group here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/aiwarmulti1 that will hopefully allow for easier communication.
