Auto kiting feature

As per the option in CTRLS. Anyone experiment with it? I have a little... sometimes it does exactly what I think my ships should be doing lots more of, and other times it looks like they're trying to give some sort of spastic chase. Thoughts?

That's pretty much exactly what it does, yes :)  It was funny to see what happened based on a couple really simple rules, and it's actually pretty useful in the right circumstances.  But you wind up having to toggle it off when it starts doing pants-on-head-stupid things particularly with certain units.

I'm considering a less "spontaneously disastrous" control that would be per-control-group, so you would have much greater control over which ships maintained which range.

Hmm, yeah, that would help. It seems like a lot of the problem too with the way it is now is that it works fine for relatively stationary targets, but fails in pursuit conditions. Too bad, because like you said, it does seem useful...
