How do I upgrade my mk1 economic station to 3 in original system?

I upgraded to MK3 economic system tech and built a colony ship in my original system in order to upgrade my MK1 station to 3, but the MK3 station is red-ed out in the colony ship's action menu. It says in the flavor text that you should be able to do perform the upgrade without deleting the original mk1 using this method.

So what am I doing wrong?

Are you talking about your home command station?  That command station can't ever be replaced, and you'll actually notice its stats are better than a MK3 economic station by a fair bit, so you wouldn't even want to.

The only station you can't replace is the one on your home system, as that one is kind of like your king in Chess.  But for any other systems, just placing the new station will delete the old one.  You can't place it exactly on top of your existing station, but you can put it somewhere it fits and then it will all just automatically shift.

Ah okay. No, I didn't look closely at the stats of my starting station, just naturally assumed the upgrades would be better.
