What is this bar?

I noticed this twice now (once in this old screenshot, once in the game).  I think it was counting up or down about once per second.  What is it?

Probably a monster taking damage down there somewhere.

Ah, yeah.  What got me is that it seemed pinned to the lower left -- but makes sense now that you mention it.
