A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / AVWW2 discovery and first thoughts
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:13:05 AM »
Hi there,

I was checking my Steam and just saw I had a version of AVWW2 in my steam account for mac. Youhou ! Let's have a try !

Well, the first screen, on the mac, is a little bit bugged (will do a report in mantis). But once the game started, it's flawless...

First reaction : Whoaw... Nice graphics ! It looks nice ! Very nice ! If the next game Shatered something (I'm sorryyyyyy I forgot...) is as beautiful as this one, well... Niceeeeeee...

Second reaction : Where is my mouse ! Let's go to options... Let's rebind the keys.... same setup as for AVWW1. Oh... it's reading my keyboard as a qwerty in the rebind keys, but not when I type a name for a new game... maybe a small bug... It's fine... Now... Where is my mouse... Not here, not here, not here.... Hmmmmm... Let's check the forum... oooooh ! No mouse ! Ok... Hell, I rebind all the keys... Can I reset them ? huho... nope... Ok then, new remapping.

Third reaction : It plays nicely even with the keyboard only... But... helll ! It's difficult : note to myself, try a lower difficulty next time :p

Guys, I didn't played much (I died horribly pretty fast :p). It looks nice, it feels nice, and it looks hard... But I'll be back to it, because I'm now intrigued.

FIrst reaction when I first read about AVWW2 was : I fear to be disappointed... Now that I played a little bit is : I'm intrigued, and I want some more...

I guess you can take it as a compliment :p

Going to mantis now :p

Hey Chris,

I have only one, quite, maybe, technical question... I don't quite good understand this :

Quote
This basically uses pieces of chunks that are created by hand in a level editor and then assembled and populated randomly.  Although enemy placement will be done by the 11 broad classes of enemy, and thus will be hand-done.

How can you place manually enemies on chunks populated randomly... Sounds quite weird to me...

Ok, thanks for the information :-) I'll search forward then :-) Many thanks for the overly fast answer !

Hey there !

It's been a while since my last post, and I must admit I skipped a few betas. But I'm glad coming back to it. The changes are huge, and it's very addicting ! Great job, once again at Arcen !

I have one question though... First, I think it is important to tell that I'm not english native. So, I sometimes have problems with some basic terms in the game (like a shard, for example). Probably I miss some nuances, or informations. Therefore my question here...

I noticed that my guys inside the settlement were talking to me, telling me some bribes of information.

***** Warning, from here, spoil possible *****
One of the most recurrent information I had was that, in short, it was impossible to go to the overlord, I better had to stay away from him. But since my last adventures on the map, this time, the dialog has changed. With me translating into another language, it doesn't sound safe to do... It basically says "The overlord is violent, you should not do something that could comes back to my settlement". In very short... Am I supposed to understand that I should have enough power to get to the Overlord ? Or is that coming closer, but not yet enough ?

For your information, I have now a Tier 3 enemies, am only armed with tier 1 long distance scrolls, exception of 1 which is tier 2. I used most of the bonus items to get more DPS and more lights. I also have upgraded up to 600+ health, 418 mana and the last one of the three is upgraded as well.

Would that be enough for the first Overlord ?

Many thanks for your help

Don't worry, that is not an argument... I'm not that techy :-) I'm just wondering why it is working on other games, but not on this one...

I don't like the idea as well for the current setting... I mean it might be original, it is still impossible to get some small strategy with your teammate, or will never know when you need to go and save him... It will sound more like a solo where the resources are in common. And that's it.

Furthermore I don't understand why it is so impossible to sync all those datas. If I take Diablo 2, which is a game from 10 years back, I used to play on Battle Net. It was a 2D game (isometric to be precise), and you could team up with other people. There were sometimes a lot of ennemies, with a lot of particles and effects... But they all were synced. And 10 years from now it was a much slower connection than what we have today... Much lower bandwith and speed...

So I don't quite good understand why it is so impossible to make... I agree that with Diablo 2 (and D3 as well), each game was populated by a max people inside the game. Why not give that kind of limitation ? For D3, everyone shouted that it was a bad idea to limit one game to 4 people playing together. And now with the beta, they all said it was enough and great that way.

Instead of not knowing how much people can join, what about setting up a limitation ? Well, one idea, amongst all the others :)

What is incredible is the respect the guy give... Even for those economists... I just went to see the actions price for Apple today... Surprisingly, Apple is at 0,00% of progression today. It seems that in his memory, the economists just froze their financial stuff today. That's the first time I see that in economy.

I call that respect. That's what the man deserve.

As I opened my Mac this morning, I saw the announcement of the death of Steve Jobs... That's a terrible loss for the geek inside us as he revolutionized the way we deal with technology everyday. Anybody know what an iPod is, or an iPhone, or a Macintosh... Or even more recently, he created the iPad, now known as the tablet PC...

As Arcen is porting its game to the mac, I felt it would be nice having a simple topic to express ourselves... And for those who do not know who Steve Jobs is, he is the Bill Gates for the Mac...

Yeap, I just did that, it's quite surprising... You wanted to give challenge, but this one just give the ability to fly over the land without touching the ground, making all enemies on the ground totally useless...

Edit : oups... simultaneous post...

Re-edit : An easy solution for this one is to add a counter to allow 1 jump but fail to trigger on the second attempt, unless we are on the ground for more than 1 second for example...

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Lost with Strategic Map
« on: September 29, 2011, 03:32:00 AM »
Hey there !

So I have now a level 3 civilization. As level 3, I unlocked the strategic map. And now I'm really confused. I understood you could send  scouts to those areas to see what is inside. Ok...

But why on earth do the strategic map shows a different map for the bosses ? I'm completely lost on that one. On my normal map, I have 3 bosses shown. On the strategic map, I have four. What is even weirder is that I killed two bosses. On my normal map, it is now one boss left. But on the strategic, there are still 4.

- Why is the strategic map showing where the bosses were ?
- Why is the strategic map showing me more bosses than I actually can see on my normal map ?

When I unlocked the strategic map, the help told me it was there to send scouts to try to spot the overlord of the region. Now, what is a region ? As I start the game, I'm in an ice territory. Is a region all the ice part  linked to the level 1 zones, and therefore one overlord is somewhere in that ice area ?
Or is a region all level 1 zones ?

I'm quite confused for the moment... If you could spell a ball of light spell inside my brain, it would be more than welcome !

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Updates
« on: September 28, 2011, 03:45:47 PM »
Hi guys !

I see that you are very busy with the updates... That's good for us ! I won't shoot or flame on you on those updates, they are more than welcome and it is always nice to see the programmers so much involved in their babies (I so love indies games for that).

But what I don't know is this one : once the world is generated, are the updates still bringing those changes into my save game ? If you guys make a small change in how the dungeons are built for example, will that be inside my save world ? Or do I need to start it  over with a new generated world ?

Good to know! We could team up in ai wars! I've no friends playing lol. They don't know anything about how fun a game is... They just call foe moh, bf, or cod to be fun games. But i know i'm a weirdo who look for indie games that are just awesome. So no friends either to play a game lol.

For the daughter test i always do it and it is always very interesting ... She is 17 and i raised a gamer girl hehe. She do not want to play it but she think there are a lot of posqibilities in the game.

I'm a very ecclectic guy. I play lots of indie games (i love how you get in touch with the programmers and how they solve your personnal problem. Arcen did great with a bug of mine who took months to be fixed but they did. With a AAA title they just don't care). I' playing ai play ai wars but also games from puppy games, positech, exosyphen, introversion... I also play hearts of iron 3 and grand strategy games. All on the mac natively.
I also play aaa titles but that's on my 360.
