AI War / Re: AI War state of the game

I found it from an article about the top 10 indy games that you should not miss- about 2 years ago. Again based on what was said above, my introduction to the game was sort of a hit or miss proposition.

Keith, I am glad to hear my concerns have been given consideration on an ongoing basis. Being an outsider looking in can be a different perspective. Whether its valid or not, you ultimately have to decide.

Time to play a game....  :)

My take-

My main problem is I play occasionally and lately play even less. I really like the game and continue to support Arcen when new expansions and new games come out (AVWW). I appreciate the high degree of professionalism and support for their products. They are to be admired for this and held out as a good example for the PC game hobby.

That  said due to my other commitments it is difficult to play frequently enough to get good at the game. I more or less fumble with it and play the aspects that tend to most interest me.  Consequently I have some experience, though it is lacking compared to most, with AI War. I really feel sorry for the newbie first starting out with the game and the steepness of the learning curve. This in my opinion is exacerbated by all the changes and frequent improvements made to the game. Sort of a double edged sword. Climbing that hill of learning can be very challenging and unless you like that type of challenge could put one off. Yes, there is good help here amongst the community that is friendly and thoughtful.  The difficulty lies in the forums since many of the prior comments may no longer be applicable to the base game and expansions. Witness the change logs for the game if you have any doubts about what I am saying. Add to that the expansion changes and one can only presume the tactics, strategies and problems discussed in the forums are mostly applicable to the game with all or most of the expansions in play (something I hope to achieve at some point with my game play).

All said and done, I think the goodness of the game, expansions, forum and long history serve well for the existent players, but are a strong barrier to entry by new players.

I am sorry if this point has been brought up before, I'd rather play than read through all the comments and discussions.

The answer confused me some. If I buy from GamersGate,  presumably they'll send me a key code for the expansion, correct? If so can I then run the expansion if even Steam doesn't recognize it yet. through Steam?

I downloaded the Expansion files from Arcen.

Can I install Ancient Shadows on  Steam  if I pre-order from GamersGate?

If not, will it be available to buy from Steam? I haven't seen anything on this and would like to continue to use Steam for it

I am planning on coming back to playing the game again. I applaud the commitment to the game, the changes make it a bit daunting for me to return with the various changes. But then it will be a challenge...

Its that redish blob you can't move through (it occupies floor to ceiling) that has the little short range fire. Can't find the monster right now in my game, of course!  :)

Played for a little while since I posted and am making reasonable progress now, I think...

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Increased difficulty?
« on: June 15, 2012, 12:01:40 PM »
I have downloaded and started a new world with the release of the 1.11 patch.

Almost immediately I died, unable to get past the fire blocker guy in the first zone- so early in fact I had nothing with which to get new upgrades. So with that I quit and started a second new world.

This one I've been able to upgrade and get things I need, but have died twice fairly early on with low level difficulties.  Having said that I purchased a day or two after game release and had no such difficulties.

Has the complexity been ramped up some at the basic levels or have I just started with bad locations? Not complaining mind you- just kinda wondering.

At the risk of being negative- too many patches in quick succession may lead to some folks taking a wait and see attitude before updating... and not giving you the feedback you really desire.

Ye olde law of unintended consequences...

Not around here. If we don't get four updates a day, we send someone to pick poke Chris with a stick and make sure he's breathing.

Edit: (that was an odd typo)

LOL - don't get me wrong, I do like updates to my games...

I've been perfectly content playing the single player. Not a big MP game fan to begin with.

Talk about fast and furious... Can't keep track of the changes as they fly by so fast...  8)

I like the store.

maybe there should be an option to opt out if the player so desires? It does take some to the randomness away that could ameliorate a potential bad start- if there is such a thing...

Very good!

It should keep my boy happy (and me) since we've each put about 5 hours into the game on this rainy Saturday!
