AI War / Re: Question on Planet Info
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:42:52 PM »
Thanks for the data. I was actually just coming here to ask, because I suddenly got incoming waves from the planet in question. Bloody eyes. I'm gonna have to fully Neuter this planet, aren't I?

My work is never done.....

Looks like the [Reinforce] number counts the Full warp gates too. I was surprised to discover that not all guard posts are reinforcing. I thought that was the point of them.

AI War / Question on Planet Info
« on: January 30, 2011, 03:05:58 PM »
I'm running what I'm pretty sure is the newest build, with all expansions.

When viewing an enemy planet where I have a scout, I get a green box in the upper-left corner. It includes a line:

X [Wave] Y [Reinforce] Enemy Warp Gates At This Planet

I'm confused. The planet I'm at is showing X=1, Y=3. There are 0 Warp Gates, (I killed it) and 9 Guard Posts, of various types. What information am I supposed to draw from the quoted line of text?

4000 ships a planet? Thought it capped out at 250 ships per command center and guard post. Am I missing a trick?

AI War / Planet names

Is there any way to insert a list of my own planet names for the game to use?

No offense X, but I don't like the planet names much. They don't stick in my head.

Yea, I noticed that yesterday. When my 500-count fleet popped out of the transports, all my planetary defenses went down.

Good times, good times.

Ah, thanks for the heads up.

That is not a bad work around for the one, but my guard-post raids are completely stymied by this where it occurs.

I'm playing 3.0.0.0 of the expansion. I am experiencing an issue where the AI will either build turrets directly on the wormhole, or directly on their guard-posts. (seen for both Special and Normal posts)

This causes serious problems for certain raids that I launch, as well as deep-striking. Turrets placed directly on the wormhole make it exceptionally difficult to order a ship to escape rather than suicide run. In the case of turrets on guard posts, ordering an attack on the post or the turret causes my ships to target freely. Lost a wave of 100 Raptor II without scratching the paint on the guard post.

I have no relevant files to attach, although I could take a screenshot of the phenomenon, if desired.

AI War / Re: deep knowledge raids?

I mentioned it in another post, but I have found cloaker starships to be quite useful for knowledge raids.

No, it does not. The starship also de-cloaks if it fires.

This technique requires a bit of micro-management, but I have refined it a bit.

1) Starship, powered off, through the gate. Assuming that it is not decloaked and attacked, move it out of firing range of any ships but near the wormhole, and power it back up.
2) Small swarm of ships through the wormhole. Assure that you saturate the tractor beam defenses, so things that are immu8ne to tractor beams are not good here. I like bombers, as they do lots of damage to the defenses.
3)Science Lab through the wormhole. Send it directly to the Starship, and ensure that they are grouped under a number, set to move as a group, and then move them away from combat. If you drag a box around them, you will only select the Starship, and it will move away from the Lab.

Now, I'm only playing against two #6, Turtle and Tank, and my Progress hasn't broken 100 yet, so I doubt this will work forever, but so far it works well.

AI War Strategy Discussion / Knowledge Raids

Knowledge raids have become much more fun since I researched my first Cloaker Starship.

I'm a big Starship person, at least for my fleets. For raids, I mostly like using Raptors, and I'm eyeballing the raid-fighters.

But I'm really enjoying sending a wave of 20x(fighter,bomber,cruiser) through a wormhole, followed by a Cloaker Starship, followed by a science lab. I've also used a similar method to sneak colony ships through defenses, although I lost the starship distracting the defenses at the second wormhole. (not enough spare ships after the first one. Bigger waves, next time)

I doubt that I'm the first to do this, but I was enjoying it so much that I had to mention it.
