A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / AVWW2 discovery and first thoughts
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:13:05 AM »
Hi there,

I was checking my Steam and just saw I had a version of AVWW2 in my steam account for mac. Youhou ! Let's have a try !

Well, the first screen, on the mac, is a little bit bugged (will do a report in mantis). But once the game started, it's flawless...

First reaction : Whoaw... Nice graphics ! It looks nice ! Very nice ! If the next game Shatered something (I'm sorryyyyyy I forgot...) is as beautiful as this one, well... Niceeeeeee...

Second reaction : Where is my mouse ! Let's go to options... Let's rebind the keys.... same setup as for AVWW1. Oh... it's reading my keyboard as a qwerty in the rebind keys, but not when I type a name for a new game... maybe a small bug... It's fine... Now... Where is my mouse... Not here, not here, not here.... Hmmmmm... Let's check the forum... oooooh ! No mouse ! Ok... Hell, I rebind all the keys... Can I reset them ? huho... nope... Ok then, new remapping.

Third reaction : It plays nicely even with the keyboard only... But... helll ! It's difficult : note to myself, try a lower difficulty next time :p

Guys, I didn't played much (I died horribly pretty fast :p). It looks nice, it feels nice, and it looks hard... But I'll be back to it, because I'm now intrigued.

FIrst reaction when I first read about AVWW2 was : I fear to be disappointed... Now that I played a little bit is : I'm intrigued, and I want some more...

I guess you can take it as a compliment :p

Going to mantis now :p

Hey there !

It's been a while since my last post, and I must admit I skipped a few betas. But I'm glad coming back to it. The changes are huge, and it's very addicting ! Great job, once again at Arcen !

I have one question though... First, I think it is important to tell that I'm not english native. So, I sometimes have problems with some basic terms in the game (like a shard, for example). Probably I miss some nuances, or informations. Therefore my question here...

I noticed that my guys inside the settlement were talking to me, telling me some bribes of information.

***** Warning, from here, spoil possible *****
One of the most recurrent information I had was that, in short, it was impossible to go to the overlord, I better had to stay away from him. But since my last adventures on the map, this time, the dialog has changed. With me translating into another language, it doesn't sound safe to do... It basically says "The overlord is violent, you should not do something that could comes back to my settlement". In very short... Am I supposed to understand that I should have enough power to get to the Overlord ? Or is that coming closer, but not yet enough ?

For your information, I have now a Tier 3 enemies, am only armed with tier 1 long distance scrolls, exception of 1 which is tier 2. I used most of the bonus items to get more DPS and more lights. I also have upgraded up to 600+ health, 418 mana and the last one of the three is upgraded as well.

Would that be enough for the first Overlord ?

Many thanks for your help

Off Topic / Goodspeed Steve
« on: October 06, 2011, 05:39:08 AM »
As I opened my Mac this morning, I saw the announcement of the death of Steve Jobs... That's a terrible loss for the geek inside us as he revolutionized the way we deal with technology everyday. Anybody know what an iPod is, or an iPhone, or a Macintosh... Or even more recently, he created the iPad, now known as the tablet PC...

As Arcen is porting its game to the mac, I felt it would be nice having a simple topic to express ourselves... And for those who do not know who Steve Jobs is, he is the Bill Gates for the Mac...

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Lost with Strategic Map
« on: September 29, 2011, 03:32:00 AM »
Hey there !

So I have now a level 3 civilization. As level 3, I unlocked the strategic map. And now I'm really confused. I understood you could send  scouts to those areas to see what is inside. Ok...

But why on earth do the strategic map shows a different map for the bosses ? I'm completely lost on that one. On my normal map, I have 3 bosses shown. On the strategic map, I have four. What is even weirder is that I killed two bosses. On my normal map, it is now one boss left. But on the strategic, there are still 4.

- Why is the strategic map showing where the bosses were ?
- Why is the strategic map showing me more bosses than I actually can see on my normal map ?

When I unlocked the strategic map, the help told me it was there to send scouts to try to spot the overlord of the region. Now, what is a region ? As I start the game, I'm in an ice territory. Is a region all the ice part  linked to the level 1 zones, and therefore one overlord is somewhere in that ice area ?
Or is a region all level 1 zones ?

I'm quite confused for the moment... If you could spell a ball of light spell inside my brain, it would be more than welcome !

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Updates
« on: September 28, 2011, 03:45:47 PM »
Hi guys !

I see that you are very busy with the updates... That's good for us ! I won't shoot or flame on you on those updates, they are more than welcome and it is always nice to see the programmers so much involved in their babies (I so love indies games for that).

But what I don't know is this one : once the world is generated, are the updates still bringing those changes into my save game ? If you guys make a small change in how the dungeons are built for example, will that be inside my save world ? Or do I need to start it  over with a new generated world ?

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / How truly infinite is that?
« on: September 28, 2011, 06:36:46 AM »
I'm sorry for theshort post but i'm writing on my phone.

I was wondering how infinite the game was. I know the map is but what about the limits for your settlements? Seeing how long it took me to reach level 2 this is very long but not infinite. Knowing about programmation and i know you can't have an infinite variable. So for the levels, what is the max cap variable set to? Is it like 99 orwaybigger than that like a large float?

I also find a lot of health potion. What is the max value for those in my inv?

I know this sound abit technical but still i'd like to know...

Oh btw please do add some loot from thebosses. I know you arebusy with it soi don't addit to the mantis but do consider it. I was surprised having no loot frombosses...

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Multiplayer game ?
« on: September 28, 2011, 05:23:09 AM »
Hey there !

No, I won't ask for a multiplayer game (though that this would be a so cool idea)... BUT... while remapping the keys, I found out that you have the letter C as default to open chat...

What is that ? Is the game multiplayer (I might have missed that one though) ? Or is that just something forgotten in the menus ? Or did I simply discovered the first DLC ? :-D

Yeah, I'm curious !

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / First impressions
« on: September 28, 2011, 01:27:46 AM »
Hello there !

I found many topics just like mine, but the reason why to create a new one is not to go over questions users have asked in their own thread...

So, after weeks of teasing, I come to the website and notice the beta is out... Cool stuff... As usual, the Mac support is there, and I'm very grateful for that...  I download the mac version, and run it... First game, first mistakes, I don't find the key to talk with the stones... And when I do, I've skipped 15 pages... Ok, don't worry, I start a new one. This time I can properly select the character, and read those lines...

Then I start to play, but as I'm not sure of where to go and what to do, I come on the forum and read the newbie guide... Once read, I restart again, and now is the good one. I understand way easier what to do... After having played like 2 hours, I say myself that this game, is HUGE... I'm not out yet of my first land visited... And this is just the first square lol...

I also tried to classify the gameplay, but... it's quite off charts for me... It's a mix of a lot of games, but the most interesting point for me is what I call the Diablo Legacy : the search for loot and objects to have better ones.

So, all in all, I liked what I played (I wanted to write this down before restarting the game, so, if I restart it, that is a good game)... It took me some time to get to it (understanding the minimap in the upper left, AND the lower right..) Once those concept are understood, it's becoming very funny...

What I found confusing is when I had my first building visited. 100% visited. I go to the next, and for some reason, I make a mistake and go out again. I go to the next one, and those two were intricates as I had something like 30% visited... So it is still confusing to me to know if the building is small, or if some may be intricates and could be reached from one to another.

To be honest, I've also made my special test : the Daughter Test. "Come here daughter, what do you think ?" while I keep playing.
"Hmmm that's not very nice."
"You play Minecraft, and Minecraft is not very nice too... What else ?"
"It's a weird game lol"...

So, I'm not sure she liked it, it's not her style, but she agrees to the fact that there is something special going on while you play... Good job... On this end, I'm now go and buy the full version (beta off course, but I like the game), and keep on visiting :p

Hey guys,

I know you have nothing to do with Steam, but here is what I'm trying to do. I had bought AI Wars and its expansions, and activated the keys I had from you into steam. Now, I want to install the game, but it just isn't working.

I get always the same error : Steam servers are saturated. Please try later. What's weird, is that I bought two other indie games from Steam, and they downloaded without any trouble. One direct via Steam, and another one which I transferred the keys. Both were ok for immediate download.

It's now 48 hours I'm trying to install AI Wars, but it's always saturated and only for AI Wars. Still haven't tried for Tidalis, but I will.

Is there any chances that there is a problem with the repository of AI Wars into Steam servers ?

I will also ask the same question at steam support, but as you guys might know, Steam support is less reactive than you guys :p

Thanks for the update ;-)

After Action Reports / Epic Fail : Disgussed anyway :p
« on: November 20, 2010, 11:51:19 AM »
Hi guys,

Here is my first epic fail since I bought the game... And I'm quite disgussed... I'm trying to go along in the tutorial (for X4000, problem is definitely fixed for me... 3h30, and no problem :p you rock !). I'm at the moment where I need to make that (it's how I call that move) suicidal move... I need to go with transport ships, empty them, and kick the warp post (I think that's the one). It is located right near the AI station, but I'm sure I didn't fired at it. I reach the zone with my transports, empty, make the warp go boom, refill the transports, and warp back.

Once on the other side, I feared a counter attack, so I basically emptied again my transports, and moved them away. I had a fleet of more than 600 ships at the wormhole, waiting, and still a scout on ennemy territory. I saw the AI was counter-attacking, and they went through.

And there I don't understand... They passed my turrets, avoided the 600 ships and passed through them, straight ahead to my station, and in just seconds, it exploded (though protected by two force fields). Game lost...

But there, and that's why I'm disgussed, I watched, just to see what would happen. My forces killed anyone. So basically I survived, but not the station. I was not underpowered, and managed to end that battle. Too late, but I won that battle... I don't know what else to do at that point, as I'm at maximum ships I could build, tech 1, tech 2 and tech 3 (just the fighters) and therefore at low energy level before starting the suicidal move...

So what would be your suggestions there ? It's true I'm invading with 4 transports (a little less than 800 ships). Is it changing something if I do the same (or try, because they die fast there) with only 1 transport (200 ships ?) Do I need to build 16 huh... don't know the name anymore... that turret that avoid ennemies from moving ? I have only 1. Do I need to remove the turrets around safe wormholes ? For the moment, I've just been following the tutorial, but there, damned, the ai is fast at taking my station out !

Thanks for any information :-)

AI War Technical Support / Trials on name, and question
« on: November 19, 2010, 10:10:07 AM »
Hi guys,

I don't know if it was already reported, or known fact to you guys... I just bought the whole pack of AI War for the mac (youhou ! told you I would :p). After having installed every package (beside Light of the Spire, who was already installed), I jumped into the game. I entered my serials, received by mail, and after the last serial, the game wrote down, on the upper left portion of the screen its version number. I tried starting my first game. Clicked on the host 1-8 players (or something like that), and there I saw my name, but it was still written trial there on my name. After restart, it came just my name. Don't know if it's normal or not, but wanted to let you know.

I also have another question : now with all the packs installed, how does it works ? DOes the game pick random ships of any extensions in a game ? Or do I need to play a game by chosing an extension ? (like in civ 4, I need to select the extension to play the game).

Thanks for your support, and see you maybe in a game online, when I'll be confident (which won't be before about 10 years :p) in the game ;-)

AI War / Attacking from nowhere... Is this normal ?
« on: November 18, 2010, 10:51:23 AM »
Hi guys,

I prefer starting a new post rather than go it to mantis. I'm not sure about what I'll say, so, just checking here first.

During my last game, I noticed something that I could can as weird... I was attacking a system, and I had a group of ships around the gate, securing it. There were no ships at all in the surrounding of the gate, and I thought it was secure.

I jumped to the near system, and I saw there some enemy ships that had jumped from the gate into my area. It wasn't much, but what I do not understand is how they passed the blockade, since I was securing the gate.

How does it come that the AI still send ships to a world of mine even though I'm blockading the only access to my system ?

Or is it something to do with the Wormhole Guard Post (it wasn't killed at that time, but I'm not sure if I got some trials of invasion until the WGP was dead, or the command post itself died).

Is this normal behavior ? What did I missed ?

Thanks

Vampyre
