AI War Strategy Discussion / How to handle early hi-Mk enemy planets?

What's the best way to handle a Mk4 AI planet that is adjacent to your home world? I gather that I need to do something about it relatively quickly, before it gets too many reinforcements. However, I'm not sure the best way to handle it without getting a lot of Mk4 ships heading back to my home world.

Just for fun, there's a Mk3 adjacent to the Mk4 which also has a Mk3 Ion Cannon on it. I'm sure that will be fun, too. :)

The previous version I tried (the one where the GPU load slider was added I think?) worked fine. The version I upgraded to this morning gives me a totally black screen except for the menus. I tried launching it both from Steam (which is where I got these screenshots) and straight from the command line. I wanted to see if anyone here had seen this before I open a ticket. Also, what information would be helpful for debugging this?

AI War Strategy Discussion / Vampire defense

Vampires have become a super nuisance in my game. They are knocking out reactors leaving me in a huge energy debt, and also taking out the occasional command post. Of course losing all of my force fields is not good either. :/ What are some good defense strategies against them?

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Skipped tutorial, missing starting resources?

I created a new world with the 571 beta. This time, I thought I'd skip the tutorial. However, I didn't start with any platforms or vitality stones. I seem to recall getting those in the tutorial in previous betas. Is this an oversight or intentional?

A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Crafting duplicate spellgems

Is there any benefit to crafting multiple spellgems? I accidentally crafted something that I had already made. Does it make that spell more powerful, or did I just waste my components?

AI War Technical Support / Autoupdate no longer works

Mac OS X 10.6.6
AI War 5.000, running through Steam.

I can't update to 5.001 beta, either in game or trying to run the autoupdater manually. Double-clicking AIWarAutoUpdater-osx doesn't seem to do anything. Found this in the console:

edit- I tried validating the steam install. It didn't find any issues. That file seems to exist in the app bundle.
edit2 - manually running the "osx-intel" executable seems to work. So maybe that shell script is borked somehow?

AI War Strategy Discussion / High tech planets

Is it a good idea to make it a priority to capture high tech planets even though they may not be strategically important? High tech planets will get high tech reinforcements, right? I've read the section in the wiki on "neutering", but it seems like that would take forever with all the wormhole guard posts. I guess I'm worried that allowing these planets to "hang out" is going to cause a problem as they get reinforcements.

AI War / Ship information in-game?

Is there a way to get the information displayed in a ship's tooltip at a time when you can't hover over a ship of that type? I found the "Reference" tab in the galaxy map, but it doesn't seem to have information like immunities etc.

AI War Strategy Discussion / What kind of command center to build?

I've just started my first "real" game of AI War (on very easy settings). I've taken my first planet but I'm not sure what kind of command center to build. Is there some kind of "rule of thumb" to follow? Should I research the advanced centers right away, or are there more important things to research?

AI War / Unseen enemy ships or incorrect message?

I've been playing the campaign tutorial. I recently cleared out Jelyjo and built a command post. However, now there is message that says there are 133 enemy ships there. I don't see them, and nothing is under attack. On my planet of Uzphi, it says there are 50 enemy ships; again, I can't see them. I understand that ships can be cloaked, but it seems odd that they would just "hang out" at my planets. Could it be enemy scouts (seems like a high number though)? I did upgrade the game a few times while playing this savegame, so I wonder if it just got confused?
