AI War Technical Support / New and Old Player with Speed Issue

I used to play AI War 3.0 and I just picked up the latest expansions of AI War off Steam. Firstly, I must say that I am impressed with all the updates and thankful to play such a great game. However, I am having a problem with the new speed of the game. In 3.0 the game was a bit slower and yet it suited me well because it was very smooth even at low speeds. But, in the newest version of AI War, the speed is much faster and when I slow down the game to try and match the 3.0 speed, the units move very rough and clunky. It's like watching frames skip.
Is there a reason why this is occurring? My vid card is a gtx 560 and my core is i5-2400k and I have 8 gigs of vram. Pretty sure my specs are not the problem.
