AI War Strategy Discussion / Riot ship shields

Hello, racked up a good 50 hours of AI war with a few friends the last month since we started playing but one thing has never seemed to be clear - riot ships have hard shields (the type that push enemies back) but does that mean that they also do the damage reduction to your units firing from the inside? Done a good bit of googling but there doesn't seem to be a straight answer
