A Valley Without Wind 1 & 2 / Citadels - Now Demonaica Fight
« on: March 04, 2013, 04:32:20 PM »
In my current game, I have one last citadel to take care of but the overlord keeps making it invulnerable with Firestorm. Since I can't do any sort of work with my allies. Is there anything I can do or what?

Can it be done once the game is created and if so, how?

AVWW Technical Support / Noticable Lag when moving
« on: February 22, 2013, 06:35:24 PM »
I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but when I'm moving around in the platforming section, the screen stutters and lags like the CPU is being overworked during that part. It only happens in the bigger areas and its only just screen stuttering, the character moves fine, the CPU isn't working hard and the FPS-monitor says its running at 59-60fps during the entire time. Any way to fix this?

Off Topic / Humble THQ Bundle
« on: December 02, 2012, 10:42:45 PM »
I'm kind of surprised no one has posted about this:

https://www.humblebundle.com/

Seven of THQ's games are up for pay what you want:
Saints Row the Third (above average)
Darksiders
Metro 2033
Red Faction Armageddon
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts
Company of Heroes Tales of Valor

PC Steam only versions. All but Metro 2033 get a soundtrack with your purchase.

Also, Humble Indie Bundle 7 is coming up after it. I got all of these games as Darksiders has been on my interest radar for a while now and I'd like to see if I have any interest in the GTA-genre of games or not, so Saints Row will be that test.

I know this will probably come up so I might as well say my 2cents, the fact that this is PC on Steam only doesn't bother me and I don't think Humble Bundle has "sold out" like so many are claiming. I think its pretty dang fantastic that a AAA publisher is giving its customers a choice in how much they want to pay for these games. Considering a couple years ago this choice was never even remotely thought of as an option.

Would it be nice if THQ made these cross-platform and DRM-free like all the prior Humble Bundles were? Yes. And does it suck that THQ didn't? Yes. But what many people seem to forget is that THQ is answerable to their Investors. (Indie developers usually aren't). I think said Investors/Stock holders would lose faith in THQ if THQ decided to waste time and money porting 7 games over to platforms that are a small minority of the desktop gaming market when they, THQ, could be working on developing the next new games to hopefully save a troubled ship. I'm all for supporting multiple platform releases but I get the feeling that with THQ's games, its not as easy or cost-efficient for them. Otherwise they would have done so by now.

I don't know. I guess I'm slightly ranting at this point and its weird to see me defend DRM, even Steam DRM, but it amazes me how people have been attacking both Humble Bundle and THQ over this. Especially when its entirely optional to buy this Bundle. Or is it just the vocal minority screaming over this as its sold over $3million with 9 days to go? Thoughts?

AI War Technical Support / Steam overlay annoyance

Is there a way to disable the left shift from being enabled when you get out of the Steam overlay in AIW? It is very annoying to deal with.

Off Topic / A Paladin Without A Crusade Thread...
« on: September 15, 2012, 02:40:31 AM »
Hi everyone,

Today, I finally felt comfortable enough to start sharing my review posts here on Arcen's forum (as well as other places). Yeah, I shared my AVWW and Tidalis review here in my signature. Plus, x4000 has been more than kind to link my reviews where appropriate and I thank him for that. But other than that, I've never been very vocal about what I do outside of gaming. But I figured now was as good as time as any to share.

I run my own blog, A Paladin Without A Crusade. Its generally, but not strictly, a technology & gaming blog where I like to rant about things like DRM and other shady practices but I also like to share what other people create as well as talk about things on my mind. I feel like now I'm starting to get into stride there. http://kingisaaclinksr.wordpress.com

I also started my own Let's Play series and just finished it recently on the Breath of Death VII: The Beginning game. With that series, I try my hand at voice acting as well as doing a regular YouTube series. That was a learning experience all of its own. Its rough at the beginning but I feel it gets much better as it goes along. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL292B00B1FAF2E6D8  I also reviewed the game here: http://kingisaaclinksr.wordpress.com/2012/09/15/my-review-breath-of-death-vii-the-beginning/

Thanks for reading!

AI War / Science Ships?
« on: September 09, 2012, 09:12:25 PM »
So we just hacked a planet for an ARS ship design, but we can't select a new ship to research. What does the hacker mean by science ship? I must be dense as I've never heard of that. I think.

AI War Technical Support / Multiplayer Joining Issue
« on: August 31, 2012, 01:22:20 AM »
So I had a game tonight and it was two of us at first and then a third tried to join. But despite having an open slot and everything, the game just said "Game is already running" error on the 3rd guy's end. We had to start a new game in order to get it to work. I thought players could join and leave any time without slowing the game down. Did we miss a step or forget something?

Thanks.

Apparently I'm wanting to talk about RPGs today.

Anyone playing Darksiders II?

Just curious.

Off Topic / Dark Souls on PC...
« on: August 29, 2012, 03:03:16 PM »
So I thought I'd pick people's brains on this game. I haven't a clue if anyone actually is playing this game, or knows anything about it. For those that don't know, the game was originally released on consoles which got PC gamers to petition Namco to bring a PC port of the game, figuring it would be great for us. I'm kind of surprised that Namco did, but they did allow the port. But...

Basically, the port is bad. Keyboard and Mouse do not work, textures look awful, screen resolution is terribly low for those of us with bigger monitors, 30 FPS locked, Games For Windows Live and many other problems. Though it does sound like the game itself works and is stable. You just have a really subpar experience. I watched a video (before it got removed) of it and it looks awful. Especially when I compare it to games that I'm currently playing like Metro 2033, Legend of Grimrock or heck, AI War. So while it has a challenging and brutal world to play in, you have to deal with a lot of problems and have the chance that GFWL may corrupt your save files.

So I'm curious what you guys think about it. Have you/will you buy it and why or why not?

I also mused about it recently on my blog if you really want my longer thoughts on it. This was before the port was made publicly available. http://kingisaaclinksr.wordpress.com/2012/08/13/musing-about-dark-souls-coming-to-the-pc/ I will also say, I have not played this game. But I so badly wanted to when I heard about it. But this port is keeping me away from it. GFWL alone is a deal breaker for me.

So thoughts?

AI War Meeting Grounds / [Closed]
« on: August 21, 2012, 11:41:44 AM »
Due to RL, this is now closed. I can't do it right now.

I'm looking for people to play with around 8-10pm Pacific Standard Time, on the weekends only.

I have all the expansions and am good at the game, though in more the casual sense. You can message me on Steam, same name as forum name. I have a less flexible schedule due to other things such as work and what not, but am usually available during the weekends for gaming sessions. Be sure to have Hamachi and voice chat via Mumble Steam ready to go. We have all expansions including Shadow installed as well as latest BETA. These games will be around 7 difficulty level, nothing extreme like 9-10 for the foreseeable future.

So hit me up on Steam!

Off Topic / Windows 8 Thread
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:03:02 PM »
Ok, time to start this as Windows 8 is coming up soon.

I am gravely concerned about this OS. It is an OS designed for hardware that is not used on desktops. It is a more restrictive OS more than ever before and with a huge potential to be as-restrictive as Apple's Mac OSX, if not worse. The interface looks like a mess, and while tiles seems to be this great idea, I just don't see it. So I'm opening this discussion here to see what you guys think about it all.

A few other opinions from the gaming scene:

Gabe Newell considers the OS a catastrophe and will likely ruin the PC market. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-26-gabe-newell-calls-windows-8-a-catastrophe
Notch is concerned it could make or break Indie Developers if Microsoft locked the OS down. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118846-Notch-Windows-8-Could-Be-Very-Very-Bad-for-Indies?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=news
Blizzard states it isn't awesome for their company.

Geez...this doesn't build my confidence any.

One more reason I will never use DRM if I have the choice. This is just inexcusable to have to worry about gaming. From losing connection with the almighty server to now getting my computer hacked. Truly, this is worth it to keep those evil pirates out of the games. >=|

Off Topic / Defense Grid 2
« on: July 11, 2012, 09:54:49 AM »
So Defense Grid 2, the sequel to the original, was announced by Hidden Path Entertainment. They're funding it via a Kickstarter which I'll link below. I really enjoy the first game and still play from time to time. This is my first kickstarter I'm supporting too. It is really quite interesting how they're doing it with tiers of rewards until the $1 million goal. I'm excited though, I want more Defense Grid. Anyone else Tower Defense players?

Also, they raised $43,000 since yesterday's announcement. That gives me hope! :)

Off Topic / S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Frozen, Dev Team moves to "Survarium"
« on: April 25, 2012, 07:39:12 PM »
So yeah, I was really captured by the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and was rather hopeful that 2 would come out, but it looks like the company holding the IP wouldn't let the ex-GSC development team pick it up...for whatever reason that could be.   So they decided to just work on a game called "Survarium", a free-to-play, MMO FPS.  Talk about a double kidney shot in the morning.  I wonder what the company with the original IP was thinking anyway?

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/25/stalker-2-dead-again-but-now-theres-survarium/

I think suffice it to say, I have no hopes of this game going anywhere good.  To go from a single-player to a MMO game is going to be rough no matter what.  And while the development team is good, I have some doubts they are that good.  And it'll be years before they're finished too so yeah....disappointing.  Its an ambitious game, but almost too ambitious for an MMO.  If they succeed, it would be great, but....that's the key.  IF.
