AI War / Re: This AI is awesome.

Did AI suddenly get more intelligent? I bought this expansion and... AI troops don't suicide anymore. I've seen 1k+ ships just wandering around AI systems (NOT my border systems), hit-and-run attacks (destroy one system, retreat), ships from neighbor systems will come to help when I attack a system with my champion and AI doesn't just blindly pile up ships on wormholes.. they retreat. I'm still playing with the same 7/7 AIs as always.

This is awesome.

Special forces as in guardians (gravity, artillery etc.)? Yeah they are nasty, but with my upgraded mlrs + lasers (6 of both) gravity guardians seem to fall fairly quickly, artillery dies almost instantly and rest I usually ignore. I try to fly from post to post and pick off nastiest guardians while I'm at their guard post. Eventually AI sends all ships in the planet after my shadow ship (or I fetch them myself by flying around a lot) and after that point I need to do things in more traditional way unless its a low level planet (in which case I just stand still under a FF and kill everything as they come).
I see you have not met the Special Forces yet then.

Yes, haven't seen those yet.

I send in my shadow destroyer and it takes out all guard posts that don't have a forcefield.
Have the AI's special forces not rudely interrupted this process?  They don't respond on all planets, but I imagine you would have hit one of the CSG planets by now.

Only real threat in this game this far (in addition to forces with EMP guardian wandering in) has been those cross-planet attacks where ships get released, so like I said in a previous post, I guess I really should ramp the difficulty up to see the true balance.

My Ai War history: I've completed 1 solo ~7diff game, one co-op ~7 diff game and one co-op spire campaign where we conquered 95% of the galaxy planets. Several failures and in-completes.

I have played for a while now, I have a shadow destroyer and I have cleared 4 blue wormholes (nebulae?).

It feels to me that the shadow ships is like a 1-ship fleet.  I created a game with random medium/easier AI types, and as a result one of them is a "turtle", AI Eyes on every other planet! I send in my shadow destroyer and it takes out all guard posts that don't have a forcefield. After this I send in raider/scout starships and sit them under shadow ship forcefields while they take out posts that are cloaked and/or under forcefields. I no longer need to send my whole fleet to take out a planet, I can just use my shadow ship to do that. This is of course without any extra AI firepower like spire waves, AI golems, hybrids etc.

So in short, I feel like the shadow/blue wormhole side missions are fun as themselves, but they do only feel like "side missions". A shadow ship champion doesn't feel like a complete game changer like a "fallen spire" campaign does. Main dynamic change seems to be that I leave my fleet home while the shadow ship kills everything except forcefielded structures and fortresses. Shadow ship has also been acting as a fast response ship when sh*t happens (EMP guardian disables a system and several hundred ships pour in, for example).

But this was vs standard 7.0 "medium/easier" ai types with almost no extra options added, so I may have to ramp the difficulty up quite a lot

By "explore" do you mean "sent the champion in" ? The nebulae are intentionally blank until that happens.

If it is still a problem, try disabling the Dark Spire minor faction, as it can apparently cause this to happen.

Of course, updating to the latest version is a good idea.

If none of those work (or none are applicable), post a save, and the developers will be around eventually. As a standard player, I can try to find out what is wrong from a save, but can't guarantee any solutions.

THANK YOU!

Yes, I had the dark spire enabled in all of my games this far. I started a new game, disabled dark spire, and there was life in a nebulae when my champion went in. It seems like that's a serious bug.

I bought the ancient shadows pack, got key, I have normal + champion role, yet there is nothing in the blue wormholes. Just  a big empty area, and I have explored at least 6 different blue wormholes. All empty. My first thought was "maybe its just not implemented yet", but then I saw this thread and people talking about them.

I have no idea how to get different shadow frigate types, apparently there are others, but if the blue wormholes are not working, there is very little I can say about the new expansion.

Am I doing something wrong? I got the setup .exe for ancient shadows and installed it into my steam ai war directory.

I bought AVWW on steam and I like it! I just completed the first area and I got to the settlement. I love the art style, it's very unique and works. I also like how game makes dungeon exploring feel exiting, constant danger but also fun rewards.

The storm dash spell things (that I found at very start), the one that makes you run extremely fast with a trail of fire and a sound of lightning, is the most fun thing ever!  :D

AI War / Re: How did you find out about AI War?
« on: March 23, 2012, 02:08:50 AM »
There was an Ai War -thread on Bay12 (Dwarf Fortress) forums. I searched it on Steam and bought Ai War + all of its expansions. After that I have clocked 200+ hours on Ai War. I love this game, and I love the recent changes :) I never really used mines etc, but now they are so cheap that I have an excuse to do so.

I especially like how the difficulty is almost perfectly scalable, you get exactly as much challenge as you want.

Wow! My first time playing against a Spirecraft - Hard - AI. The 2nd exogalactic wave is incoming and just like last, it goes straight for my homeworld (which is on the edge of of my own part of the galaxy).

My shields are holding and suddenly...my home command station just dies. With all the shields around it still holding. I reload and this time I watch carefully for ships that can shoot through forcefields and I see.. raid starships. Raid starships that AI puts under some shield things and then RUSHES them towards my home command station! This means the raid starships are protected from my fleet while he tries to..assassinate my homestation.

Daaaamn, I didn't know AI could be this clever.

AI War Meeting Grounds / Re: GMT+2 Newb looking for game partner(s)!

I might be interested in a game but I'm very rusty! I played the original back in 2009 and have only just started playing version 5.

My time zone is GMT (UK).

I do have a headset but I'll need to dust it off, does the game have voIP or do you all just use Skype?

Game itself doesn't have any voip, but steam has. I've been using steam and skype.

But right now my integrated motherboard sound card is busted. As for gaming, my (integrated) sound card is busted and I'm in process buying a new one, also I have 3 co-op campaigns going on right now. So ask me in 2-4 weeks, sorry :/

Right, and I'm not sure if I can start new campaigns right now. Still might if you ask, but at least next week is very busy for me.

First victory! Yay!

My ally was a defensive guy, and with 2 botnet golems he gathered up the biggest zombie army in the galaxy! The 12k or so zombies provided defense for our systems (along with his mk 3 turrets etc) while I threw my 2-2,5k fleet (+other extras like golems) at enemy. Repeatedly.

13
Shield Ninny 7 + Entrenched Homeworlder 7 (random easier both). I quickly take nearby worlds, build main line of defense in the worlds around my homeworld and start scouting for interesting things nearby. This includes stealth detection, forcefield, fortress and masses of turrets sitting on each of the wormholes leading to my homeworld.

I scout, see and take an advanced research facility. But then I hit jackpot: Factory IV! I capture it and build scout IV, with which I scout the galaxy. I capture rest of the advanced research facilities and pick up a botnet golem along the way. My fleet is now 1500 ships strong, and in addition I have several spire ships. Only 4 hours or so has passed since start of the game (my starting position was GOOD, allowed a quick capture of all ARS's) and I feel invincible. I decide it's time to go destroy AI homeworlds. The Shield Ninny is annoyingly well defended: AI Homeworld has an "AI Eye" on it, and so has 2 worlds leading to it. Meaning, I'd have to destroy all 3 eyes before mounting any kind of assault. Also, only world leading to these worlds has an AI Co-Core, and there is one on the shield ninny homeworld. Also there is a raid engine in there. Sounds like trouble, so I decide to go to the other one first.

I enter the world next to the other AI's Homeworld, where the first V ships are located with fleet of 1000 ships + botnet golem (my only one). I left 500 ships to defend my network of worlds, because there was a cross planetary attack just few minutes ago, which still had left ~500 ships as "threat". I enter the world and... "Immune: reclaim". Looks like my golem is useless. But I still have 5x the numbers of AI's ships! Time on game clock is 5 hours 22 minutes. Oh boy I was wrong. The guard posts are tough bastards, and the V-class ships are very tough too. I destroy several guard posts but eventually my fleet gets destroyed, before I could get to the fortress III that sat next to the command center, which on turn sat near the wormhole leading to AI homeworld.

This is when AI decides to strike back. Just as my fleets last ships are dying on enemy world, AI decides to attack 3 of my worlds almost at the same time. To add to the fun, there is a wave incoming. Before I can rebuild or regroup, AI takes out the 3 worlds he is on, and continues on to the next worlds. I retreated to my main line of defense, sent golem to guard my only IV-factory and 200 ships to the human settlement I had to capture to get one of ARS's (human settlement, +100 AI progress on death). My core infrastructure survives, homeworld defensive line holds, but I lost most of my worlds.

Oh well, live and learn. Next time I won't underestimate the power of AI Core Worlds :)

Oh yeah, and the offer will stand as long as these posts can be found here. I'll be sure to edit it these out, if the day comes when AI War isn't an option anymore.

*edit* I'm not sure if I can start new campaigns right now. Still gonna leave this here, just in case.

Hello!

I just bought the Ai War through steam, and I love it ^^ I love the gameplay, I love the concept, I love the music, I love the..

..however, I have a problem: none of my friends are the RTS types! So I need some new friends for playing Ai War multiplayer! Solo is fun too, but I suspect multiplayer is where the juicy parts will be!

I live in Finland, which is GMT+2. My schedules are fairly free, work at office hours is only limiting factor keeping me from staying online! I have a microphone, skype, or whatever else probram needed for talking with you! But I can live without talking, if you don't want or can speak online.

I'm fine with playing only one game, but I'll gladly play multiple long campaigns if you think it's fun!
