The changing names also shows up in your system view. You can quickly assess what is on the other side by putting descriptions in brackets after the names.

Ribmurdle (IC/Fort) for instance.

Do other player's see these changes?

The changing system names (if it shows up for everyone) actually could solve my problem. I'll give it a go and see how it feels.

AI War / Ctrls Tab + Auto-FRD Engineers
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:56:39 AM »
1) Is there a hotkey for accessing the CTRLs tab?

2) Is there a way once you've toggled auto-frd engineers to make them not FRD. I've tried hitting V to clear the mode like how auto-group works but the game keeps resetting them to FRD after a time.

What other tricks are there then? How do you force multiply your army against theirs?

I.e. if you enter a system do you fly away and draw them all into a long line where you can focus your firepower on the front end of the stream, ensuring kills as quickly as possible with minimal damage.

How do you make AI's chase you into your own system.

Then how do you best punish an AI who chases you into your system. What tricks do you use? (Warheads? Massed turrets? Are there great brawlers  to leave on your side etc?)

I was figuring if we could just replace/supplement the P0-P9 list with these, we could assign them ourselves.

Not a bad idea. But truly custom text for every planet is still a more powerful system. Having some 'prefabs' is fine but being able to click a button and add exactly what you want for every single planet, especially if it is co-op, giving you all the granularity and scope you need for every situation.

That is what I find about the P icons as well. I like to use them mark boundaries, what is on a planet or not a quick mouseover note that I and my teammates can see would do the trick.

True, but they'll only appear when you hover over the system (unless you have always show names on, which I'm presuming you do?).

Also, short words could do.

Fort
SFort
Ion1 Ion II IonIII (different possible formats)
Mass1 etc

Would be possibles as well.

Depends on the size of the text and how clean your filters are.

Oh I see. Maybe I should pester the unity makers about it. :P

I use codes too with my Ps.

However, getting my friend into AI war I realized that abbreviations of actual units names can be a much more powerful system and far easier to communicate than trying to share your effectively 'icon based' code with a friend. They're like hotkeys, the associations can be very personal and it's easier to agree on a short text name for something than on what icon suites it.

I like the unit images idea a lot but once again, customizable text is the much more powerful _and_ new player friendly option (especially given the unit images don't always immediately convey their significance to you. Sometimes the units are quite odd looking given their in-game performance).

Having both would be great to suite different player styles (maybe a forum style bracketed text system could be a nice hybrid solution) but if I had to choose, customizable text would be my preference any day.

Yeah it's a must have feature I think.

These days multi-tasking is a way of life and this game really begs for that ability without actually hampering the playing experience.

When I saw the notes feature I actually expected it to show up on the Galaxy map.

I thought I could replace the P0-9 system with two-three letter notes like "IC" or "Eye" or "Fab". As I hovered over planets along a route I'd quickly garner what was there and only use the P0-9 system where I wanted permanent markers (end points for my expansion for instance).

Would it be possible to add something like this to the game?

I've mocked up something in paint to illustrate the kind of thing I am talking about.

With two letter long notes it would be very unobtrusive.

Edit: Did better version in second picture.

What features unity bring?

Don't think so. I've killed two fortresses now with missile turrets this week. Maybe... I don' t know. I imagine you checked for anything else that would have had interceptors.

But that AI eye strategy is good. It does make them a fair bit easier if not coupled with Command Centre shield posts/forcefields. Didn't think you could just bypass them with a quick little raid.

Thanks!

AI War Technical Support / Borderless Windowed Mode
« on: March 23, 2012, 12:57:01 AM »
Like Starcraft 2, SWTOR or Mass Effect 3 is there a way to get a true borderless windowed mode for AI war.

This is the perfect game to be grinding some nights to but the transition to desktop isn't seamless and takes too long (roughly 10 seconds each way).

Even in very intense games checking on certain online resources (AI war wiki, AI war forums) for info and solutions is affected by the lack of a true borderless windowed function.

Also, when using youtube for music it makes the transition in and out every 3-4min much more noticeably clunk.

Playing in a normal window just doesn't feel right.

It would _measurably_ and _significantly_ improve the practicality and importance of the gaming experience and the hours I would sink into this game if I could seamlessly transition into the background without sacrificing 'presentation.'
