AI War / Re: So, this whole crystal thing
« on: March 31, 2013, 04:47:05 PM »
It would also be interesting if the AI would be able to commandeer the crystal operation when the player loses them and use it for offensive purposes.
Defensive setups would be either overrun by the player's fleet or left alone being inconsequential.
If the AI would be able to, for example, build a special type of guard post or support base on the abandoned crystal mine and then launch attacks from there, this would be interesting.
Neutral factions or hybrids could also use these "opportunities" to bolster their offensive capacity and launch attacks from them.

After Action Reports / 9-9 Trial and error
« on: March 31, 2013, 10:46:20 AM »
It's been a while since my last 9-9 attempt (I've been plagued lately by this terrible affliction called a "day-job") and after suffering a crushing defeat against a crafty spire I restricted myself to the lower difficulties for a while.
But now it's time to take revenge for all those mocking taunts I received last time when another of my core planets fell to the AI onslaught and finally make a serious attempt at very hard difficulty.

The setup is not too brutal (meaning not all neutral factions are on):
9- 9 non technologists on a simple clusters map with a random homeworld.
Minor factions will be dyson sphere, devourer golems, human marauders, human resistance and roaming enclaves.
I'm playing with all expansions but I don't take a champion, since I'm not too keen to meet these nemesis frigates when I'm assaulting the homeworlds.

Broken golems and spirecraft are set to "hard", while the botnet golem (which seems to have turned into some sort of demi god and got it's own faction) will be set to "medium".

And off I go...

Things seem to go in my favour:
I got the teleport station as a bonus ship and started building a cap of these to hold off the first AI wave which turn out to be bombers and are easily dispatched.
There is a Mk IV world bordering on my homeworld though and since it's the only one with decent resources I decided to attack it early after I took over Murdoch.

Currently things seem to be looking up with a slight chance of rain and exo waves later on the afternoon.

Shattered Haven / Re: steam key
« on: March 24, 2013, 10:53:08 AM »
Well I believe the Steam copy does not check to see if Steam is running. You could download it through Steam and then copy the game folder somewhere else.

I feel pretty stupid for not having tried that one :).
And it works without a problem in wine as well !
Thanks Oralordos.

Is there a way I can download the standalone executable when I bought the steam copy ?

AI War / Re: Current balance of starships in exo waves?
« on: March 23, 2013, 11:46:38 PM »
The spire starships would generally not be getting their full dps due to the photon lance mechanic (or so I keep getting told), but yes, I see that the numbers are a bit ridiculous there considering what even a mkI HK is supposed to represent ;)
This is going to end up with the hk's being buffed isn't it  ;D

Yesterday, I had an exo in a 8/8 game and I found the mobs of bomber/spire starships a lot scarier than the HK's accomanying them as they were quite impossible to destroy before they reached the homeworld.
They pretty much incapacitated my golems and waltzed through my defences until they were stopped by rams.
This seems pretty balanced since they are supposed to counter golems/spirecraft and I quite like the change.
They add extra complexety (and danger) to the exo waves now.

PS: I noticed most of them are also immune to Artillery ammo, which reduces the effectiveness of the artillery golem on defence, but I guess this was done to make the artillery golem a more specific counter instead of a catch-all for high HP enemies?

Shattered Haven / Re: steam key

When I bought AI war and AVWW, it was possible to download the game via steam (which accepts bank transfers, as I don't have a credit card) and use the key to unloack the stand alone version (using steam only as a distribution platform, since I typically run them on a fedora distro under WINE).
Is it also possible to use the  key the same way with Shattered Haven ?

Just tried the new starships in a new game and it seems starships also have become cheaper so the can be produced and replaced faster and losing a few is less costly than it used to be.
Overall the strategic choices have expanded as you can now unlock more of the higher mk's according to your needs even in the early game without investing a significant part of your knowledge. Overall I think the changes make the starships more interesting and make for more strategic choices, though I agree with the suggestion some of them should get more fleet support capabilities.

Great, thanks!

About time there was another Monty Python reference.

AI War / Re: The Regenerator Golem

Perhaps it could repair other ships , regardless of supply and not sacrificing its own hitpoints, and have small to medium range weapons to hold off a moderate amount of enemy ships. It could fulfill a support role for your fleet and act as a rally point while on the offensive.

AI War Strategy Discussion / Re: Strategic reserves

The AI tried to send a 100,000+ ship CPA at me.  It could only find 30,000
What actually happens when it can't find enough ships ?
Do they magically spawn (that would be cheating  :o)?
Also, just out of curiosity, how do you prevent your motherboard from catching fire ?

AI War Strategy Discussion / Re: Strategic reserves
« on: March 03, 2013, 04:23:40 PM »
Thanks, this explains a lot.

The large amount of ships on the homeworld is probably due to it being a defensive AI (not really sure because it is hidden untill game is won or lost) since most of it came after me and made a retalliatory strike against the planet I  staged the attacks from.
So the "70%" means the AI is still holding that percentage of ships in reserve (hidden from view) untill I attack the homeworld again.
It came down to 6% during one of my attacks so I assumed I'd destroyed 94% of the reserves, but it seems this was wishfull thinking on my part.
I managed to take down the wrath lance with the etherjets so I'll move in for the kill now.

This mechanic and the new guardposts really make homeworld assaults much more interesting (in a a brutal, evil sort of way).

AI War Strategy Discussion / Strategic reserves
« on: March 03, 2013, 02:03:28 PM »
I hadn't played in a while due to free time constraints and when I started a new game about a week ago I checked the patch notes of the latest (and not so latest) updates and noticed the addition of "strategic reserves" to the AI's arsenal.
I'm now nearing the end of this game and I am assaulting the first homeworld and I've been doing battle with the AI fleet for about an hour now..
Before my assault on the core- and homeworlds there were about 2000 Mk II and III ships patrolling the home- and coreworlds and about 3000 - 4000 Mk V ships on the homeworld themselves. At the start of the attack I got the message "AI is deploying reserves" at 70 % and since I only have lighter ships (cutlasses, etherjets, ...) I decided to wear them down by spamming a gazillion reinforcements while keeping them at bay with a black widow golem and riot control starships.
The problem is I can't figure out which ships are actually the reserve ships and if I can bait them away from the homeworld themselves (the whole point being probably they don't chase after you but stay close to their homeworld).
This is important because there is a wrath lance on the homeworld which can apparently vaporise my fleet in a few seconds so I would prefer to fight them on the coreworlds if at all possible.
Is it possible to lure the strategic reserves on the core worlds to beat them there or do they stay on the home worlds themselves (and how can they be recognized) ?
If not, is it at all practical to destroy a wrath lance through a stealth attack by etherjets or penetrators so I can engage the strategic reserves on the homeworld themselves ?

Any helpful tips would also be greatly appreciated.
