Off Topic / Ahh yeah, off topic.

Well, now that we have this, we can abuse it entirely =D What to do, what to do?

Heh, well I was wondering what peoples gaming backgrounds were around here, because everyone seems so well mannered compared to some of the other forums around the tubes.

I started gaming with the SNES and played all the usual games, Super Mario, Kirby all that stuff. Kept it real with the n64 and started playing GoldenEye and Perfect Dark as well as Starcraft 64. The former I kept steady with all the way today with all the popular console games such as the Halo games, but especially Halo 2, the latter led me to PC gaming and RTS, where I played SC, WC and Diablo II. Then to others like Rise of Nations and all that kind of stuff. Then a few years back I got introduced to Space Sims/4X games and have been pretty happy with them, always keeping them on my HDD in the offchance I'd pick em up.

On the MMO front, I've tried WoW twice, but couldn't do it, because I felt like I HAD to be playing in order to make it worth my while. I dabbled in ROSE Online Beta, and that was fun, picked up my buddy's Guild Wars account about 6 years ago, and couldn't keep playing. One MMO I really like is EVE. I haven't played it in a few months, but I paid for 8 months- the longest I've ever been subscribed to any MMO. Second runner up is Phantasy Star Universe. Only because I didn't realize that the 12.99 or what ever is automattically charged every month without my say so, so from January to last month I played maybe two hours in January, but have been paying for it since.

Anyways, that's enough text for now, I'm off to play the Nexus demo. Hopefully people will come a-flocking and post their own stuff here in our resident Off-topic category.

AI War Technical Support / [Solved] WI Installer Package
« on: September 05, 2009, 01:06:24 AM »
Hey,

Due to my current internet configuration I don't have an active internet connection, so I use this laptop along with a USB drive for downloading demos and such. So anyways, that means I couldn't download any of the packages from my desktop. So that means I'm playing the game without the WI package that I was supposed to download. Is that important? So far, I haven't had any issues at all.

Thanks,

Oh don't worry, I had already put in a good sized list of generic stuff to put in, I can't really think of anything too original though, but trust me, I'm trying.

Hey,

Is there anyway we can get an off topic forum or anything of the sort? I guess it's extra bandwidth and there is the IRC, but I can see it helping out with the occasional hijacked thread or whatever IDK... We could put all sorts of fun forum things in there.

Oh speaking of Nexus, I just googled it because you guys were talking about it. It looks awesome, it's just not available on Impulse so I can't get it.

Ooooh, please let that ship inertia/accel/decceleration be in 2.0! Oh and bullet trails! No biggie. ;D

EDIT. Thinking about it, Steam has achievements, so I guess that's where they are being implemented. But please please make it so there are more than a dozen achievements. I want there to be  a ridiculous amount so that you couldn't just get em in like a week or two of playing, I'm talking like fun, interesting long term ones.

Well speaking on behalf of Anno 1404, it is the best city builder that I have ever played period. Top notch graphics for one thing, very complex. Not a spectacular campaign though. Amazing production values all around.

Hey, whoa whoa now, the AI did not cheat at all as far as I know, man. All it new was where you started, otherwise it played by the exact same rules you did. Lemme lookup the old AI handbook from SCC... Bam, straight from the horses mouth:
In multiplayer and custom missions, the computer starts out with normal resources and units and follows all the same rules that human players do. The only advantage that the computer AI has is knowledge of the map-- while it still must obey line-of-sight and detection limitations, it automatically knows where resources, enemy towns, etc. are located. The AI is also extremely efficient, making it a dangerous opponent.
Looks like my memory is spot on after all these years. I gotta agree with the 12units selection. I guess it does make it more tactical, but since it was my first RTS experience, I don't mind it at all.

That sucks. I guess you might not have liked it because you heard the hype or something? I didn't get any of that, I just picked up a game off the rack, and tried it out, and was introduced to a completely new type of game (RTS). I was hooked.

But you can't really think it was actually crap? Is there a particular reason? Keeping in mind this is a total hijack of the original thread and everything.

Still, any help is better than no help, for the most part, thanks for the effort!

Pfft, story is a great -add-on- to any game, as long as it's well written, like X has been saying. For those that are interested maybe someone could start a thread somewhere that has everything that someone wants from a story, and then someone who wants to can write up a good story, then he would post it, and the forum could proofread it.

We could agree on a length of the story, if it should be in chapters, how many characters, factions and all that. It could be fun. Also a good way to bring the forum together. Seeing as we already all hate each others guts, amirite?

Remember the Science Center cut scene? Where they have to fend off the Hydralisks? That was crazy good. I watched it recently, and it's still pretty good, resolution though, not so much.
