AI War / Re: Guide to Finding Coop Players
« on: December 03, 2014, 09:55:15 PM »
The bulletin on the Steam community hub has been just given a refresh; so, leave a post there if you're looking for a game to help it pick up pace!

AI War / Re: Managing carrier spam
« on: November 28, 2014, 04:46:12 PM »
It depends on what phase of the game you're in, but from my current playthrough this is probably the most effective setup lategame:
* MK3 gravity turrets so you can afford to use a MK3 military station
* All forcefields you can muster to attract fire, and if necessary, micro them on and off to push all enemy ships back to the wormhole
* Any and everything else you can gather to distract carrier fire

The goal is just to keep at the wormhole for long as possible, but eventually they will get through if there's too many of them and you cannot replenish your distraction.  Spire fleet helps a lot (and the great majority of firepower), and pausing to do micro and reconstruction is necessary.  Honestly it does seem they are by far more threatening than any other unit because they have such gargantuan amounts of HP-per-unit-inside.  Also remember to focus munition boosting guardians because they affect carriers, and flag starships if their numbers are low.

A setup like this has been working for me ever since I was beginning to get hit by ten+ carriers in the midgame; with a large spire fleet, it can continue to hold against ~80 carriers (and massive golem/botnet/spirecraft/spire waves, sometimes simultaneously), but mostly because of the friendly neinzuls spawning thousands of absorbing ships.

Hello folks; a new AI War sortie bulletin post has been made on the Steam hub where people looking for a game drop a post with the necessary details for others to browse and add to their Steam friends list to organize games.  This post is renewed generally biannually so we refresh the list of people looking for games.

If you haven't taken a look already, please check this topic!

AI War / AI CPA turtling
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:04:12 PM »
An individual on the community hub is experiencing issues with 20k ship/950AIP CPA turtling over two/three chokepoint planets which I thought was fixed some updates ago.  That high number of ships with ultra low ship cap seems pretty bizarre, but as I have not played such a high AIP game in 5.0+ I don't have the knowledge to provide insight.  Anyone else have similar experiences, and is this still the intended AI behavior?

I love you Keith.  Lance and Foogie probably do too; I just thought you might have wanted to know.   :-*

(Be well, sir!)

AI War / Re: AI War Beta 6.007 "Burying The Hatchet" Released!
« on: November 20, 2012, 03:07:52 PM »
I'm surprised to the extent of work done for the enclaves (you love us that much?  :-[), but I would definitely hope that an interface would be made for the interaction.  Even a simple click-on and choose behavioural stance via button icons would be nice.

Honestly my thought as well but given the fact that I haven't done a FS game several months prior to the AS beta perhaps the situation has changed since.  Back then though, definitely IMO.  Once you progress mid-way through the FS campaign you already have a very formidable army of cap ships that instagib most fleet ships rapidly while projecting stacking shields; from there you can spec in defense for both increasing turret caps and improving your spire ships via synergy with modules.

IMO FS and/or golems are vastly helpful assets over playing a vanilla game after you know what to expect.

Champions seem less significant than either of those as Fox said they're just one ship and generally match up to a couple FS frigates+DDs in firepower (although the botnet turret seems particularly the exception).  Time-wise they're not worth it IMO--even with their accompanying entourage--but you can essentially progress through the entire AS campaign without any AIP cost (in my first test run on 80 planets I stuck to my homeworld).

AI War / Re: Concerning Champion Abilities
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:26:01 AM »
I felt that was one of the more significant issues I'm having with champions right now on my first whole playthrough; ideally I want champions to not simply be just another ship, which sadly wasn't the case in my experience.  I played a glass cannon spire ship outfitted with beams and one forcefield module for nebula missions specifically to wait until it gathered enough energy for 4-6 forcefields before soloing a starbase with my hands on ctrl+q... it was effective and all I did, but consequently it didn't feel visceral or engaging.  As a ship in the fleet, it was basically another starship that was really disposable; I feel champions really need to be distinguished from an FRD-able ship with modules, but of course striking the balance of being not too overpowering or overly-demanding of micro.

And curious, but are the [possible] upcoming missions going to be all "defend the base" situations?

...and I think some of the special-forces/threat-fleet logic I wrote recently could be adapted to it.  Just gotta find the time.

AI War / Re: New to AI. Is Ancient Shadows worth getting?
« on: October 20, 2012, 06:38:54 PM »
I'd say it's worth it in terms of encompassing a unique playstyle in both singleplayer and multiplayer which suffices the occasional desire to just blow stuff up without having to construct a base (only in multiplayer though), and as Copper said the expansion is quite nice at five dollars and will help support the developers to further support the game.  IMO all expansions that Arcen releases are worth the price.

As for the latter, not too much.  The AI is mechanically consistent--there aren't really any cheese tactics that completely negates the challenge.  Well, except maybe Spire campaign ships, golems, and stacked attritioners with gravity turrets on a whipping-boy planet to varying degrees; but, AI War is highly customizable to your difficulty liking so you can disable elements you think are too imbalanced for an enjoyable experience.

...crud, my bad.

Or maybe the post was being cloak boosted by a stealth post.

AI War / Q: AS installed but achievements don't unlock on Steam
« on: October 20, 2012, 01:06:17 PM »
Just passing this along; there's a question/problem on the Steam hub with regards to AS being activated but achievements not registering on Steam;

"With the latest version + ancient shadows installed. The achievements I unlock don't trigger anymore on steam. I made sure I had a good connection, that the steam overlay was working and all. But still any achievement I get unlocks fine ingame, but doesn't unlock in steam anymore."

AI War / Re: AI War Beta 5.096-5.097 "Release Candidates 1-2" Released!
« on: October 19, 2012, 03:18:01 PM »
Beautiful.  Outstanding work as usual to both you and Chris; can't wait to try this out with my group on the occasion we have enough time to!

Hey everyone!  With the introduction of the Steam community hub, screenshots, videos, and discussions can be contributed conveniently from the Steam browser interface.  Some content has already been added by attentive folks, but I'm sure some of you have a myriad of fascinating screencaps and write-me-ups of your most wondrous adventures that we can all enjoy.  Or perhaps you want to rant about how resilient you've become to masochism due to prolonged exposure to the AI's cruel torture devices.

In any case if you'd like to contribute appropriate material to our community hub or just want to browse around, feel free to pop on by!

As a side note, the Fall 2012 AI War Meetup Sortie post is now up, which is another avenue of finding people to play with.  Make a post in the given syntax and add those who meet your qualifications to your friends list.  Note that you need to be logged-in with your Steam to make a post on those forums.
