AI War / Re: Nominations for Worst Ship Ever (V)

And for the same knowledge cost as well. Both the econ station and metal/crystal mark harvesters cost 9000 knowledge (mark II + III).

I vote for a cap. Right now mark I/II harvesters are useless when you have mark III harvesters while every other mark I ship in the game never loses it's usefulness (well, on 60-120 planets at least).

GoG.com now has Fallout (1) for free! The download also includes the Fallout bible, some Fallout artwork/avatars/wallpapers and the soundtrack. The Fallout Bible is a very interesting read and Fallout (1) is one of the best RPG's I've ever played and the best FO game in my opinion.

FREE?!

Downloadingdownloadingdownloading...

Yes. I must've convinced at least a dozen people today who never even played Fallout 1/2 and started with FO3. When something is free people are suddenly a lot happier to give it a try :).

Make sure you download the resolution patch as well:

AI War Meeting Grounds / Re: Looking for a game coming weekend

I have time this weekend. I'm not that experienced (30 hours) but I read a lot of stuff on the wiki so I should be fine.

I'm GMT+1 as well. Do you have a Steam account?

EDIT: @Zoutzakje, I added you on Steam ;)

I'll vote as well.

Slightly off-topic:

There is a really easy way to obtain this achievement:

Pick a 20 planet map versus two level 1 AI's, both Shield Ninny (requires the DLC though, otherwise pick a defensive one). Give them -300% resources and yourself +300%. Disable waves and set AI auto progress to 0. Choose the snake map type.

Now keep generating new maps until you get a very cheap, spammable unit. I picked Neinzul Youngling Nanoswarm. Select 15 homeworlds, start the campaign and go to your 'frontline'. Now set the speed to +10 and build a lot of engineers (50-100). Then, build a lot of turrets. Heavy beam turrets, fortresses... whatever you want.

For the last step, go to the planet with the spammable unit, build 12-20 space docks, set them all to loop and place a waypoint on the last AI planet (alt + right click on the galaxy map). They'll start sending units and all you have to do now is wait. With the speed at +10 it took me only a few minutes until I got the achievement.

By the way, this achievement has created quite a lot of new activity on the AI War Steam forums. Sadly most people only care about the achievement and have no further interest in this game (too complex). But hey, maybe some people will not immediately give up and decide to give it a try thanks to the achievement :).

AI War Strategy Discussion / Re: What to do next?
« on: August 17, 2011, 04:03:58 AM »
I have one more question. Instead of creating a new thread I'll use this one :).
I'm doing pretty good in a new campaign (40 planets). I only captured 5 planets so far but I already got 3 advanced research stations, I scouted most of the galaxy and I got a Mark V fabricator (Chameleon ships).

Unfortunately I've got a planet with a human settlement and a Mark V fabricator right next to a wormhole. And as you can see, a new wave is on it's way.

I already got the wave covered with my main fleet and some MLRS/sniper/tractor beam turrets.

Any suggestions how I can protect these two buildings? Maybe a force field (which will cause any AI who exit through the wormhole to spawn outside the force field) with lots of tractor beams / turrets covering it?

Go to the galaxy map and then click on notes. When you write a note about a planet, you can change the name of that planet.
It is indeed very useful to give your planet names like "Home", "Home-1", "Frontline 1", etc.

Haha I lost my first game :). It's great how one tiny mistake can have such a big impact.
I left one of my planets, the only planet with no numbers next to it, almost undefended. I also forgot to gate raid the planet to the south of it (with 153 enemies on it). When I finally used some fighters to destroy the warp gate, it was too late. My fighters were followed by hundreds of AI ships and my command station was destroyed in less than 2 minutes. At the same time, the AI also attacked the now isolated planet to the east (see the map, it's the planet with the P0 priority). And only 30 seconds later he attacked my home command station while I desperately tried to bring my army back from the frontlines, but it was too late. Ah well, at least it was worth an achievement and a lot of experience :). Starting a new campaign now..

Thanks for the tips btw! They're definitely useful. I'm also trying to read old topics here on the forum, lots of useful tips to be found. It's quite time-consuming though.

Hm guess I forgot the core shield generators :). Thanks, I'll scout for them! Is a "core shield raid" a common strategy (maybe with a transport ship and some starships)?

AI War Strategy Discussion / What to do next?

So, I watched all the video tutorials, read most articles on the Wiki and completed every tutorial. I'm now doing my first campaign versus 2 level 6 AI's.
I'm a bit unsure how to proceed. Here's a screenshot of the galaxy map: (click to enlarge)

The P9 planet on the bottom right corner contains one AI Home Command Station. It is, obviously, protected by Mark V ships. Both P8 planets adjacent to it have Mark IV ships.
I already found an Advanced Research Station, however, my army is still pretty weak (Mark II Bombers and Fighters).
There's a large "snake" connection of planets at the top, maybe I could capture those and set up a strong defense at the end of the "snake"? I'm a bit worried about the AI Progress getting too high though. As of now I have four planets where the AI can attack me. Maybe I should do some gate raids first?

As you can see I have one scout on some planets. I tried to send Scout starships + Scout M2 blobs everywhere but usually they died after 2-3 hops.

I also have way too many resources  :P

If this isn't enough information, well, ask away :). I can always provide you with more screens/info.

Thanks in advance!

I wish I had known that you can rename planets.  It's a great help for me now. I simply rename my homeworld "HOME" and all adjacent planets "HOME-1", "HOME-2" etc. Now I immediately know if my homeworld is in danger!

(not sure if this has already been mentioned :) )

Off Topic / Re: Recommendation for boardgame for x4000? :)
« on: July 11, 2011, 08:49:29 AM »
What about War of the Ring (the board game)? It's a game for 2 to 4 players where you either try to destroy the One Ring or conquer all of Middle-Earth. The only downside is that all the "good guys" are painted blue and all the "bad guys" are painted red. So it becomes a bit hard to distinguish your units, but you could simply paint the units yourself to solve this problem.

I've only played Settlers of Catan from your list. It's quite fun but it doesn't really go in-depth. It's a perfect game to play with your family, but if you want something more "advanced" to play with friends, I wouldn't recommend it.

AI War / Re: Two questions

Thanks for the fast replies!

I must've overlooked the warp gate. I managed to destroy it and now I'm almost finished with the tutorial. It really is a challenge to understand how this game works, but it's also very rewarding.

I'll try to use Steam chat less often. Or I'll convince my friends to buy AI War so we can voice chat or chat in-game ;D.

AI War / Two questions
« on: July 11, 2011, 03:02:55 AM »
Since I'm new here, hi ;D

I bought AI War a few days ago and I absolutely love it. However, I ran into two problems during the tutorials.

1) Quite often I can't select anything. My cursos reads "Left-Shift" and as soon as I press Left Shift, it's fixed. But it's quite annoying having to press Left Shift so often, so how do I prevent this from happening?
2) During the campaign tutorial, I'm at the part where I need to raid (destroy) a warp gate. I got two human raid starships and a transport ship but I can't figure out how to actually destroy them. Is there some kind of building that I need to destroy? I tried the Wiki and Google but couldn't find the answer.

Oh and one more thing. My resources are usually maxed but I don't really know what to do with all those resources. I already have a main fleet of 500 ships and plenty of turrets. So, any idea's? ???

Thanks in advance!
