AI War / Ctrls Tab + Auto-FRD Engineers
« on: March 24, 2012, 06:56:39 AM »
1) Is there a hotkey for accessing the CTRLs tab?

2) Is there a way once you've toggled auto-frd engineers to make them not FRD. I've tried hitting V to clear the mode like how auto-group works but the game keeps resetting them to FRD after a time.

AI War / Notes 'tool tip'
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:44:07 AM »
When I saw the notes feature I actually expected it to show up on the Galaxy map.

I thought I could replace the P0-9 system with two-three letter notes like "IC" or "Eye" or "Fab". As I hovered over planets along a route I'd quickly garner what was there and only use the P0-9 system where I wanted permanent markers (end points for my expansion for instance).

Would it be possible to add something like this to the game?

I've mocked up something in paint to illustrate the kind of thing I am talking about.

With two letter long notes it would be very unobtrusive.

Edit: Did better version in second picture.

AI War Technical Support / Borderless Windowed Mode
« on: March 23, 2012, 12:57:01 AM »
Like Starcraft 2, SWTOR or Mass Effect 3 is there a way to get a true borderless windowed mode for AI war.

This is the perfect game to be grinding some nights to but the transition to desktop isn't seamless and takes too long (roughly 10 seconds each way).

Even in very intense games checking on certain online resources (AI war wiki, AI war forums) for info and solutions is affected by the lack of a true borderless windowed function.

Also, when using youtube for music it makes the transition in and out every 3-4min much more noticeably clunk.

Playing in a normal window just doesn't feel right.

It would _measurably_ and _significantly_ improve the practicality and importance of the gaming experience and the hours I would sink into this game if I could seamlessly transition into the background without sacrificing 'presentation.'

AI War Strategy Discussion / Tactics
« on: March 22, 2012, 12:29:35 PM »
Hey guys, I'm new to the game but quite eager to get good at it.

I've noticed that this game actually has a lot of depth to it. Even just realising that a pair of Raid Starships could zip into a system, knock out the Ion Cannon and get back without a scratch has opened my mind to all sorts of possibilities.

However, I know am I a fairly straight forward player sometimes. I have firm ideas of what is good and what is bad. I can be very conservative when I'm new to something.

Recently in a two player game with my friend came up against a system with a gravity drill, a fortress and lots of zenith bombardment ships. Wanting to take the system gravity drill intact with only Mark 1-2 level ships I would have suggested he sledgehammer the command centre and then beach-head outside the range of the fortress and missile turret it to death. Bombard ships would be dealt with once the command centre death forced them to counter-attack.

Ofcourse, he instead realised that the system had no real tachyon tech. He unlocked the cloaker starship, built two and took a strikeforce in of (was it around 80?) ships in low power mode and snuffed out the command centre in a single volley (well, almost, the counter-fire killed half his ships before he could shoot again).

It was a real Klingon moment.

Anyways, it hit me that I would have probably not have explored that option and have spent the next hour sledgehammering the system to bits.

So, what other cool and cunning tactics are out there for killing things like:

1) Fortresses
2) Ion Cannons
3) Orbital Mass Drivers
4) Heavily reinforced planets
5) Gravity Drill planets (with any of the above)
6) Etc

I know that transport ships can be used to real effect for instance. 2 Transports, 1 for taking damage, the other loaded with enough starships to pulverise the target and then survive long enough to load back up and leave.

What other cool things are out there?

AI War Defender Mode Strategy Discussion / What should I build?
« on: March 22, 2012, 10:53:42 AM »
In exact numbers, what would let me hold off the first wave in a five planet single hostile wormhole setup?

What should I unlock. What should I build?

All turrets until I run out of cap? Mk1 stuff or mk3? Pumping ships from all five docks with minimal stationary defenses until I hit ship caps?

What are the best defensive units/turrets in the game? How can I amp a single wormhole's defender advantage as much as I can?

Presume I have enough forcefields to hold the first wave down.

Failing that what do you build when you play (give scenario context so I can scale it to what I'm playing)?
