Skyward Collapse / Re: Rock Paper Collapse
« on: May 15, 2013, 12:33:05 AM »
Case in point: Miasmata is a game that gets a lot of forgiveness due to potential and being indie. Still not sure why it does...

Maybe because they nailed it on the environment graphics? Hmm, it goes back to graphics again... Hopefully that's not it!

About Skyward Collapse, I was actually impressed with the way the game looks, but as long as the gameplay is good who cares. That's what your games are about anyhow.

The environmental graphics are...well...suboptimal at best, pre-Half Life 2 at worst. And the fact that I'm still comparing graphics in games to HL2 really needs to stop one of these days. But I digress. You are probably right. It's something I've noticed a LOT lately that people will get blinded by "amazing graphics" to the point that they ignore the gameplay itself. Bioshock Infinite is the prime example I can pull up but I can also say Aliens: Colonial Marines, Star Trek (the game) and other movie-tie ins. People get this idea that because it has a great graphics to it, it's the best game evar. Surprise: it isn't. And it's why I've been getting more critical about games that try and throw shiny graphics at me without providing solid gameplay. Gawds, Miasmata was the most disappointing game of this year. I actually had the creature's AI break on me and I scrapped the game shortly after that happened because it broke the immersion. I heavily criticized the developer in a review on the game later...

It's why I don't plan on buying Infinite because I've taken some really extensive looks at the gameplay and there are way too many warning bells for me to want to try it at this point. Lackluster combat, lack of exploration, fairly on-rails. Not what I want in an FPS. It's unfortunate that games seem to be heading towards movie formulas lately. Throw tons of graphics at the player, put it on rails, add a "great" story and people will buy it up. Disappointing as heck. If I wanted a movie experience, I'd go see a movie.

So to Chris, I say bring on the gameplay rich games and don't worry about shiny graphics. Because I'm fed up with shiny graphics. I want game mechanics that legitimately keep me interested for a long time. It's why I've played AI War for over 213 hours over the past four years and I'm not done with that game. It looks like the next expansion will keep me just as interested.

Skyward Collapse / Re: Let's Player Recommendations

Hello Peeps

Thought I'd come in (finally after lurking for months) to recommend Quill18 as well.

He's done an AI War Let's Play in the past and does enjoy a good Strategy game. If he enjoys Skyward, he's more than likely to give a pretty lengthy Let's play, maybe even 2. Given the length of a standard game, it's something he would be able to complete in a time-frame that suits him... I imagine people have heard of him. A rather well Spoken Canadian with quite an upbeat temperment and good attitude to gaming.

There's also another point for das24680

He's a pure strategy guru and enjoys a good LP. He is also a very well spoken and intelligent gamer. He does mostly focus on the less obscure games, so that's always a perfect opportunity to get Skyward noticed too. His subscription base is growing quite strongly as well. But I certainly wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. The depth he is prepared to go to to explain a title is very much unmatched on YouTube.

I know it's been mentioned. But You can't go wrong with these guys.

I have never heard of these guys but I'll put them in the queue to check them out, considering they're getting a few mentions here. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's pretty hard for me to find an LPer that isn't a carbon-copy of Pew/Tobuscus (egah to that) or is a Minecraft junky or...just terrible. I don't have any suggestions atm especially for a strategy game like this one. I might take a look at it but I'm not a 1000+ view YouTuber. Outside of Starcraft 2, I just don't see many strategy gamers on YouTube that get that high of views. Love to be proven wrong though...

I guess it comes down to whether or not you should let the author/creator's political/personal views affect the content he/she has made. This is something I debate over a lot and don't have an easy answer for.

I guess that's a better assessment than "its broken". Too many games have been released in a broken state recently, especially from the AAA publishers.

And what happened to the Valley 2/SH expansions?

From what I hear they weren't profitable enough to make expansions worth it.

Pretty much that. Not enough sales to justify expansions for the Valley games so I can't blame Arcen for not making them.

You should try Drunk Fortress next time, if you want to continue the drunk strategist thing :P

Fox, I want an episode of this up on your channel by the end of the weekend. No excuses. ;)

For focus groups, reddit.

For translations, reddit, forums. Offer arcen catalog reward. Provide trans instructions.

Levels are not mods. Inventing your own tidalis gm rules could be.

*shudders at the thought of using Reddit for a focus group*

Honestly, moreso than translating games over to different languages. I would wonder how Tidalis would do as an iPad/iPhone/Android app.  Though considering it didn't do all that great on computer, I doubt it'll happen. If these future games are turn based, they might adopt decently well over - but I would guess Arcen isn't really in the position to try.

I doubt it would sell all that well. Maybe iOS gamers would surprise me for once but it seems like the more intelligent games like Tidalis do not sell well on iOS. Considering the most popular games are Angry Birds and Temple Run, well...there you go.

Well I am not going to try to convince you if you don't want to try it ;) I just think you would get about 2500 sales per language you support. And I don't believe translation would somehow make that a loss.

You won't ever know if you don't try....

I personally would like to know where you got that # and what evidence you have to back it up.

I know a friend of mine played it some last year but quietly quit playing and I didn't ask him why yet. We always talk about Eve or something lol. It's been approved for release on Steam via Greenlight but it hasn't been released yet onto Steam despite that happening months ago so...dunno why.

As far as I know the community is still going strong, if still small. Beyond that, I haven't a clue.
