I dislike this need for 'balance' for high level characters, and feel it's a mindset that bled into the system from MMOs.
I don't see anything wrong with the "linear warriors, quadratic wizards" paradigm.

As I understand the problem is that when you are actually in a play session it feels really unfair that you wizard-mate can do so much more than you in combat. You *used to be* equal and now he rules for no good reason.

I guess if you're playing a tabletop roleplaying game in a manner where you feel you have to win on the DPS meter or something silly like that, this could be a problem.

Feeling that your character matters is an important part of the game.

But I mean if I were a wizard I'd be totally screwed. Too much pre-planning in my eyes.
But basically nothing can beat a properly prepared high-level wizard.
So basically they are imba? ;)

Pathfinder :)
Yep, ok, so 4th was a step in a wrong direction for you. Why?
4th feels like a pen and paper MMO to me.

I actually never could understand this complaint. Yes, pen and paper MMO. This is WONDERFUL. It's like a computer game but you get to play it with real people in front of you. And you don't have any griefing issues. What not to like?

I'm more interested in role playing than seeing what random cool powers and one shots your character can throw at each encounter. In fact, D&D in general is pretty bad at encouraging people to munchkin and be combat focused rather than roleplaying. I enjoy Pathfinder because it's basically pen and paper comfort food, since I grew up with D&D, but there are absolutely other RPGs I'd rather be playing, as a player. As a GM, I can warp the system to whatever style I want, and I do.
As far as roleplaying goes you do not need anything as complex as DND to roleplay. There are zillion roleplaying systems and some of them can be described in just a few pages. D&D as far as I know included combat as an integral part of the game from the very beginning. So in a sense you get what you paid for.

Now my DND experience is very limited I played only a bit of 3rd edition a while ago but I own the core sets for 3.5 and 4th. I enjoy reading them (I'm a rule lawyer type) but you never can fully appreciate a game mechanic unless you actually *play* it as opposed to just reading the rules.

On the face value I liked the 4th chnages in my opinion they fix most glaring issues with 3 (wizards being imba in the end game, healers having nothing substantial to do in combat, etc)

Thus I'm quite interested to know *why* people prefer this or that edition. I never read Pathfinder rules but I understand they are not far from 3.5 with a few tweaks?

With 4th edition I understand Wotc tried to make the game more accessible. I think they succeeded but they alienated a big part of playerbase who can't embrace the changes. Now with DND next they are trying hard to please everybody by providing a slime core and the addon systems so in theory one can use as much or as little of the game system as they want. I'm not sure if this is a practicable approach, time will tell.

So if you guys can explain why you prefer one edition over another or what you take on DND next is, it would be most appreciated.  :)

I must say it DOES have a language selection control (on the screenshot at the very top) but it's a bit.... one-sided.

Anyone like D & D? What do you think of D & D next? Which edition of D & D up to date do you prefer and why?

Hurray time line is saved. The game is out but I get "not available in your region". It's probably only for russians http://store.steampowered.com/app/214730/

Argh.

Do you know if the game itself is in russian?  Or is there an english version.

Region restrictions or no, I figure I can find a legitimate way of getting a copy.  But I wouldn't wade through something other than english.
Looks like it's not localized (yet?) This http://store.steampowered.com/app/214730/?cc=ru gives me Notice: This title only includes Russian language.

Space Rangers HD: Revolution
Thank you.  If I see it come out in English, auto-buy.  Even if it's just a new story line with everything else the same.

It's getting released 15th march on steam.
This could be perilous for my current project's timeline.

Shattered Haven / Re: First play feedback

I was just wondering, Chris, you've been answering "we won't have time for this before the release" on a several occasions now. This got me a bit puzzled. Sure, you need to make the release and sure you need to concentrate on the features for that release. That's granted. But aren't you going to look at the stuff that you don't have time to look at right now after the release? Or more simply put, what are you plans for this game after the release? Is it going to be done and dusted, or are improvements and possible expansion are going to be done?

Shattered Haven / Identifying items
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:25:45 AM »
When you first come across of an item, it's described and a record added to the encyclopaedia. But after that it seems that there is no way of telling what an item is. There is no tooltips neither on quick-slots nor when you open inventory. The game does not tell you what it is you are holding even if you have something "in hand". Basically I can see no way of linking an item that I see on the screen to the encyclopaedia description of the item. If I could somehow find out *the name* of the item, I would not have this problem.

Now, you can tell, well when you see a hammer, don't you know that it's a hammer not a sickle? Well yes, with hammer it works. But there are other items in the game not-so-easily identifiable visibly.

So am I missing something? Is there a way to identify items in your inventory?

The inventory improvements are coming tonight!  http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Shattered_Haven_-_Beta_Release_Notes#Improved_Inventory
Probably work in progress or side effect of an upgrade but this looks quite weird.
1) Do we need button labels on empty slots? If we do, they would have looked better if we had something like a empty slot graphics (a cell or something) not just a empty space not delimited by anything. Otherwise it looks weird
2) Is there a way to move items in the inventory? I always want to reorder them and I can't figure out how. If it impossible, then the screenshot configuration is mildly annoying - itmes in random slots with no way to move them

UPDATE: I just re-readed the release notes and it seems that both my complaints are actually intended changes. Does anyone else feel these are awkward or is it just me?

I assume he means you have one "stack" regardless of how many units are in it. Rather than having a stack every 100 units say.
Yes, that's what I meant.

Obviously just that one change wouldn't leave HoMM in a workable state, I'm just comparing it to... well, basically every other terrestrial strategy game I can think of, where a square can either hold an individual soldier or a group up to a certain defined-by-troop-type size.

The HoMM way just feels off to me.
Erm, you know you can split them if you like, yes? But I'm having a hard time imagining why would you *want* to?

This immediately reminded me of another thread we had awhile ago when the creators of a kickstarter run for a 4x game came here to talk about their game: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,11726.45.html

I think that previous kickstarter got funded, I wonder did the game ever saw the light of the day? ;)
