Summary0002782: Fallen Spire Shard Teleporter
DescriptionThis was first suggested here: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8178.msg71536.html#msg71536
In short, allow an option to build a spire teleporter that teleports the shard back to the nearest homeworld/spire city. The teleporter would require a set amount of time to activate so the player would have to defend it from the AI while it gets ready.
This allows for a more normal deep-striking experience with the spire shards instead of neutering all the planets in between to capture the shard.

This has to be made significantly more dangerous than escorting the shard, to prevent players from always choosing to build the teleporter. There should be some trade-off. Something like the teleporter tearing a rift in space, allowing the AI to more easily warp in another exogalactic wave along with the normal chase reinforcements.

You win the game if you bring them all home, it has to be hard enough for that.

Its hard enough colonizing the systems, bringing the shards [i]home[/i] shouldn't be a slow grind (i.e. the "difficulty" comes from the fact that its boring, not that its hard to do).

The trick here is that the teleporter takes time to get ready to teleport. So you still have to perform a frantic defense of the shard. In this case, the choice is supposed to be there, do you want to slowly escort it home? Or defend it in place and warp it home. This can also allow one to capture a shard without having to neuter or capture all the planets in-between the shard and the homeworld.

Perhaps using the teleporter also triggers a large CPA against your worlds; it'll be tough defending against the forces attacking the shard and your planets.

[EDIT] Oh, wait, that already happens.
