A buddy and I both were playing tonight and we both experienced this same issue. Chat seems to lose focus when other parts of the UI update, including when previous chat messages disappear after they have displayed for their regular amount of time. Even though this doesn't cause the game to crash, I'd call this a major problem since it seriously affects communication in multiplayer games. More info about my setup: Windows 7, 64-bit. Full screen, 1920x1200. Steam version.

We've learned to rely on ventrilo instead. No idea what the root cause appears to be though. Will try to find a common symptom.

(0017942) Niccus (reporter) Dec 25, 2011 1:00 am	XP, 32-bit, windowed here, Steam version. Deozaan's observation works here -- chat loses focus whenever the message list updates. I'm also getting a strange issue where the text box is only partially highlighted sometimes -- typing puts text in the box, but the text is a duller white, and doesn't automatically scroll when the text is too long and extends to the right. This bug seems to happen sporadically but does persist past saving and loading. It seems to only happen in planet view and not galactic view. The bug only happens with particular camera positions, but is otherwise repeatable -- when you reach a particular region of camera zoom and position, the text box starts acting weirdly, but when you move away either by zooming in/out or moving around, the text box acts normally again. Returning to the old camera position makes the bug happen again.
